Consistently on the Roku if I pause any video, then press Play to start it again the video starts playing right away but the sound doesn’t start for 2-3 seconds. The sound is in sync, but if there is dialog I miss what is said and have to rewind to hear it again. This does not happen with the Plex player on Playstation 5, or the Windows desktop. It only happens on Roku but is consistent. Can it be fixed so that audio resumes immediately when video starts so that no loss of important dialog happens?
My Roku model is the Premiere connected via wifi to a Windows Plex server. Playstation is also connected to the same server on same wifi.
This is an annoyance but would be great if it can be made to work cleanly.
I’ve experienced this on a newer TCL Roku TV - but it happens with DLNA as well, not just Plex, so I think it’s something with the Roku (on both 10/10.5).
Do you have an external speaker setup or is this happening with the built in TV speakers?
My silence at the start doesn’t show up if it’s TV speakers and is a lot less noticeable or non-existent if I have the audio output set to Passthrough instead of Auto - and that has solved other odd audio issues I’ve had with other Roku setups.
I have a different audio issue with Passthrough I’m trying to get sorted out (not a Plex bug) but it’s less of an issue overall. Reported it here in case it’s something Plex folks can overcome.
You can also try fiddling with the Direct Play settings - sometimes turning that off (which barely impacts playback - sometimes some subtitle situations) can resolve odd audio issues.
I did notice today I don’t get the audio silence at the beginning of files - which I would get when not using Passthrough - but I do get a very short silence after pause\resume … enough to miss the first word if someone was speaking. I didn’t test via Roku Media Player yet, but I don’t notice the same via Netflix or AppleTV streaming.
I noticed this is more common on disc rips (bluray/dvd) vs Web-DLs … and noticed some odd audio hiccups on my other TV playing the same files on a Roku Ultra connected to a DumbTV so it’s entirely possible Roku messed up some local file playback audio support again (last year there were a couple AC3 bugs for a few months).
Yup, I’ve just resigned myself to going back a notch after pausing (or use the PS5 to watch Plex instead). It’s an annoyance but there are worse things in life.
I sent in a note to TCL in case it’s on their end… maybe it’ll get picked up eventually. I didn’t notice it on my dedicated Roku boxes but I am not on those as often.
Had a TV repair on my TCL for a different problem (replaced mainboard and power board) and that didn’t change the couple second audio silence when resuming from pause. So doesn’t seem like a hardware issue.
