Status of "100% complete" recording bug

@kinoCharlino i have felt like for a long time it is a problem with the plex transcoder choking when signal gets weak and especially pixelated. When the whether is bad I expect more of these issues. The problme is why does the transcoder hang instead of just giving me the pixelated 5 seconds.

I keep testing the latest versions and all of them since 1.6.1 do this chunked recording stuff, which is horrible, I understand its for live tv, but for pete’s sake give us the option to do single file recording or this chunked stuff. when it takes 3+ hours to see a 1 hour recording is total crap. yes if we want live tv then you have to have chunked recording but if we don’t use it and don’t care about it do we all have to suffer with slow and hung recordings and things taking hours to “build” to a single. file.

I have no signal problems but I can see the chunked recordings building after recording is done taking hours to add these small few second parts to the single video.

I have had no problems with plex recordings up to 1.6.1 after that the switch to chunked recordings logic just plain sucks the live out of system and 99% of the time causes tuners to be hung up or never finish building.

For what it’s worth, I have a HomeRun PRIME with a cable card, not an OTA antenna. I don’t get weak signals and still have this issue.

Also, like some other posters said, when this happens I get “3 tuners—18 recording now” on the Live TV & DVR page. Each failed recording bumps the number of recording now by 1.

Unfortunately, the DVR has become pretty much useless since this issue cropped up.

I don’t have data to back this up, but it feels like the problem started happing for me when 1.9.0 (with the transcoder deadlock fixes) was pushed out.

I also have the issue. Plex 1.9.4.4325, Ubuntu 14.04, HDHomeRun EXTEND. Some videos stuck at 100% complete, others finish without problem. I am happy to provide any details if helpful.

Add me to the list. 1.9.4.4325 on MacOS 10.13. I’ve had 1-2 of 10-15 recordings actually record the entire episode. Mostly I get 6 seconds at the beginning.

Waste of money for the HDHomeRun Extend, and the first time I’ve felt like Plex wasn’t worth the PlexPass in the 3 years I’ve been using it.

Why? Do you think the Extend is part of the issue?

Just want to add my name to those experiencing this. The recording seems to work most of the time but I am left with a *.ts file in the appropriate directory which is not seen by Plex. If I use ffmpeg to convert the file to MKV it is found but unplayable from Plex (to be accurate it never starts playing).

Ubuntu Linux 16.04 Plexpass 1.9.4.4325 and HDHomeRun Connect OTA.

Thanks!

That seems like a different problem entirely. On my system Plex can see and play original TS files and MKV files converted with Handbrake without problem.

That’s unfortunate because I had been hoping it was all part of the same thing. Oh well.

I’m going to throw this out there because it might actually fix someones problem. A while back, I installed a new Plex version on my NAS. Afterwards, many recordings never made it out of the grab folder (100% complete). I have two accounts on my NAS and if I start Plex using the ‘other’ account, there was a permissions issue. I standardized the folder permissions and now start Plex with the same account every time.

If this helps someone, great, if not, I tried.

Since yesterday my recorder doesn’t record any more. Two days ago, there was nothing in .grab folders even if the 100% was claimed by the server.

The clock or something seems completely off : in the “starting soon” section, I have already started episodes, as well as already finished episodes, and even shows marked as “yesterday”.

… and the EPG refresh seems stuck in its initialization stage.

This is annoying. Yesterday had all programs record until “this is us” that stuck at 100%. Since then it doesn’t seem that anything is recording. Ubuntu 17. - 1.9.5.4339. HDHomerun (plus) HDTC-2US - OTA

Check your log on you HDHomerun and see if the first entry is “watchdog reset”. That’s what seems to happen to mine when I get the 100% stuck. Not sure whay it happens, but it seems related.

Also, if you restart PMS, your recoding may show up - at least it has for me.

I had one recording hang last night, Server Version 1.9.5.4339 on Mini/i5/10.11 with two HDHomerun Connect. Found it was still running under the Plex Transcoder, (>ps -U user | grep plex) It disappeared from the ‘.grab’ directory as soon as server was shut down. The recording showed up on relaunch but was incomplete. (TS was only 760MB in .grab so it failed early or restarted for partial.) I will try killing the process next time to see what happens.

I haven’t had a watchdog reset since - 20171011-19:52:36. I restarted the service and that didn’t bring the recording up, nor did restarting the PC. And the 100% recording in my in my recording schedule.

Add me to this list with this issue as well. I’m seeing it with the most current version on a QNAP install. :frowning:

1.9.5 didn’t solve the issue, either on a Synology or my PC. I’ve subscribed Emby to give it a try : everything is working and more responsive. I’m currently checking my most tricky use cases (involving multiple players + distant networks + VPNs) but so far so good. At the end, this long term bug gave me the impulsion to look somewhere else and it’s like my eyes were opening  Goodbye !

I am running into this problem… The PlexTranscoder.exe process IS running but just at 2MB/s so if you wait a really long time then the program will eventually show up in the recorded TV folder.

That doesn’t happen for me, but also I’m on a Mac so there’s a different set of systems running.

I run Plex from a Mac also. Under 1.9 versions I was having no issues until I recently added a Quatro tuner along with my Prime. I notice when recordings would fail I could go to the Plex icon in the status menu and see transcoding sessions active but no watching anything nor anything supposedly being recorded. I am not connected to a switch for either device, both are direct to the router. Checking the Homerun tuners I could see no active tuners in use. So I would just do a Stop all Transcoding from the Plex status menu.

I fell back to 1.6.1 because that version works as expected.

@kinoCharlino, can we get an update on this fix? I’ll have multiple days of no issues, then a recording gets stuck at 100% and all subsequent recordings are lost. You’re already starting to lose paying Plex Pass customers and we’d REALLY like to get some confidence in the resources Plex is putting towards fixing this basic feature of the paid service. Thanks!

Potentially Optimistic Resolution (for NAS): I originally posted on October 10, 2017- “Here’s my log running v1.9.2.4285. Recording schedule shows five shows from last night (10/10/17) stuck at 100% with nothing appearing in the .grab folder or the respective destination folders after a typical and working recording schedule. There were no error messages. Recordings occur on a 24/7-on home server. I cannot recall which previous version did not have this issue, but recently also noticed that shows were not recorded for the full length of time as set up in the schedule.

Since then I have upgraded to server Version 1.9.4.4325; however, this time around I installed the software as a fresh install as opposed to installing over the existing version and it has been three full days that I have been able to record shows in their entirety, transcode them and watch all programs I selected through the recording schedule. While I only waited these few days to see if this would break, I thought it might be long enough that this solution was stable enough to share.

The steps I took were to completely uninstall the PMS from my server, restart the server and then I signed-out of my Plex account from the web. I next downloaded the latest version of PMS for servers (doesn’t really matter when you download…just sharing the order of steps I took) ensuring the version I downloaded was compatible with my NAS’ processor; I have an Intel Celeron J1900 installed in a QNAP TS-451 (64 bit Version 1.9.4.4325). Note that by removing the server’s PMS you will lose your recording schedule and all settings/preferences; you are doing a fresh/new install as if you hadn’t installed PMS before and this will require you to recreate your libraries, link your tuner, download the latest program guide, etc. After the PMS was up and running, I ran PMS from my server, which launched my web browser so I could log into my Plex account. Afterwards, I went through the motions of recreating my libraries the same way as I originally had them, relinked my tuner, selected all the shows I wanted to record, etc. I did not create a new Plex account and did not change any settings as I had before. Also note you will need to run your setup locally as I originally tried to re-setup my account from work and was not able to connect to my NAS, because I did not yet have remote access. Lastly, I do not plan to upgrade to the latest version since this was not an enjoyable exercise and hoping that the engineers respond to a dedicated paragraph to them below or until they have a permanent fix for this issue and for my operating environment.

Like I said, it’s now been three days full days and I have not run into the same issues as described in my original post. I hope sharing this might help someone else. Since there is a lot activity on this thread, I removed the notifications by email, but if you have any questions, feel free to either PM me or mention me in your post as those notifications are still on. Expect a delay in my reply.

For the Plex engineers, please (1) validate that this may be a potential resolution; a complete and fresh install, (2) it would be great if you can make an easy way to allow us to backup and restore our database which would include all settings/preferences, recording schedule and anything else worth backing up…even better, a check-box list of options we can chose to backup.

Hoping some of you can get up and running as well and looking forward to hearing from the Plex Team!
