Stop enabling subtitles by default

Server Version#: Version 1.16.6.1592
Web Version#: Version 4.6.2

I have had this issue for a while now where subtitles keep getting turned on by default. 99% of my files are blu-ray MKV muxes with subtitles in MKV format. I generally include the movie subtitles in the container. If the movie has forced subs, I have them flagged appropriately as forced PGS subs. By default, I only want to show forced subs. I have this recurring issue though where PMS will just enable English subtitles for all the movies in the library. I do not know what triggers this. I’m sometimes able to fix this problem with some manipulation of the user and PMS language settings. The problem returns randomly though. This time I can’t seem to fix it at all. Under user and PMS language settings I have tried enabling forced subtitles only by default. That didn’t work. I then tried changes the language settings to “manually” select. That didn’t work. Any time I add a movie to the library now, english subs are being enabled by default.

First of all, how do I fix this? Second of all, how do I prevent this from happening?

One thing that can is your Account Audio/Subtitle Language Settings are not set or set incorrectly.

Secondly if the mkv language track is not set properly will cause this.

Okay I have tried setting it back to the following (see attached screenshot), and it looks like that fixed things again. I’m not sure why it didn’t work before. Now I just need to figure out why they keep getting turned on. The audio and subtitle tracks are flagged appropriately (English for English audio tracks and subtitles, forced flag for forced subtitles).

Remember, the abpve settings are per user, this includes managed accounts aswell.
Every single user has this setting. That includes all managed account you may have and all your friends that may have access to your server shares. It took me months to get my friends to configure these settings.

But they need to be configured to have a ‘flawless’ plex experience.

The above settings don’t change what you already have in your library. You will need to refresh metadata on those items. New items added should take the new setting.

Yes I understand that. But that doesn’t explain why the subtitles keep getting turned on randomly without my input. I’m the only person with access to my particular Plex account.

Perhaps not. It is most curious. You did comment that you just changed the settings back. Maybe that has something to do with it?
I do know that plex keeps your selected choice forever.

Though I suspect this is not your issue.

Anyway, let’s keep an eye open for the next item you add to plex.
