Store Track Progress Across Devices?

This topic is from 2016 here: Store track progress

Does this feature even work? For anyone?

Just wondering if this is still going to be fixed someday. It’s been about 5 years and I still can’t sync track progress across devices the same way TV and Movies work.

I listen to audio books on mobile, nvidia shield and android auto (via playlists setup as the entire book), however, the track progress is never saved when pausing on device and moving to another. I always have to remember the track number and timestamp, then tediously seek that resume point manually.

As requested numerous times, please revisit the Music library features and give them some much needed love.

It would be great if we could get unfinished tracks to show up in the Continue Watching and Up Next queues like the rest of our media does.

I’m not aware if this issue. My music tracks remember where I stopped and asks me if I want to continue. Here is as screenshot on Web.

Have you double checked that you’ve enabled the option in the library?

That’s good to point out. It does seem to save track progress on the web app, but that progress doesn’t appear to be saved server-side because other devices aren’t informed of the progress.

Question: Can you successfully sync track progress across devices? Or are you only exposed to the web platform?

Devices that store Track progress locally:

• Plex Web

Devices I have that do not get synced track progress from the server are:

• Android mobile app
• Android Auto (playlists comprised of the same tracks)
• Nvidia Shield (client only)
• Open Plex Home Theater
• Plex Media Player
• Plex for SONOS
• PS4

The progress is only saved on the server. Clients do not store this information.

I do not know if the track progress is available on the Android Auto or Plex for Sonos clients. These are limited in how they interact with your server. Open Plex Home Theater is not an official Plex client and no longer maintained so it could be broken there.

All other clients on your list do support using the progress from the server.

Here is the same song from Android mobile.

So you’re saying you often switch between Plex Web and Android mobile when playing music?

Seems obvious that Plex needs to be notified that the 2 primary use cases for listening to music: On your speakers and in your car (aka Sonos and Android Auto), does not store Track progress as advertised.

As a ninja, you could let the devs know quite easily, thanks.

I don’t, but I tested the scenario to demonstrate that the play progress should be saved at the server level so all clients should be able to have the “resume” option.

Ok, these are exceptions. When casting (Sonos, Chromecast, Airplay) or using a 3rd party service (Alexa, Android Auto), these don’t provide feedback to the server so progress can’t be tracked when played from these sources. And except for Chromecast I don’t think you get the option to resume from these either, since they don’t support that.

Ahhh, thanks for the info. Makes more sense if they don’t send timeline updates during playback.
