Stream from Android Phone to Linux computer (Plex-desktop)

Hello,

I have downloaded media on my android mobile using plex and they play fine. I am sat on plane and would like to use the bigger screen of the laptop to play these files. The laptop is running the Plex-Desktop app. Both the laptop and the android mobile are connected to a travel router and thus on the same wifi.

Is there any way for the Linux laptop to play the Plex media file on the android phone?

I tried clicking on the ‘Cast’ button on the phone and opened up the Plex-Desktop app on the laptop. The phone says No Streaming device phone and does not see the Plex -Desktop app.

Do you have your usb charge cable available? Looks like you can change the usb connection from charge only to File Transfer or MTP. Then your phone will just look like a thumb drive to your laptop. Copy the files onto the laptop and play from there.

From my Google search

  1. Connect: Plug your Android phone into your Linux laptop using your USB cable.
  2. Authorize: Unlock your phone and tap the USB notification (or check your drop-down menu). Change the connection type from “Charging only” to File Transfer (or MTP).
  3. Copy Files: Open your Linux file manager (e.g., Nautilus, Dolphin, Thunar). Your phone should appear as a drive in the left-hand sidebar. Click it to browse, then simply copy and paste the files to your laptop’s folders. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

The media files on the phone are in the Plex app. I dont think they can be exposed outside the Plex app.

Well, you might be right. I know I have one video downloaded on my phone. I sure can’t find it via my phone file manager. I was thinking you’d have more access to the phone file system via the MTP mount
