When I stream across my local network, everything works fine. I stream from an UnRaid server. Locally I use mainly apple TV to stream which works fine. Remotely when I travel I use a combination of IOS and Windows to stream and I begin having big issues streaming. Sometimes it continues to load indefinitely and other times it says it can not load. Other times it works fine. It seems to be file specific where it a particular tv show / movie doesn’t work on either platform. I don’t think it is a network issue as my upload is consistently 35+ mbps. If it was a transcoding issue would it not have issues locally as well?
When you say you notice it on some files and not others I would look to see if this file is transcoding vs direct playing. I also assume that you have looked at your client quality setting vs the upload speed setting in remote settings.
While not quite the same thing I found I have found that adjusting the encoding of the files sometime the containers (mp4, mkv).
Most of my player problems have come down to bitrate of the media and or the audio codec used for the audio tracks.
When you travel are you on Wi-Fi ( I assume ) or cellular ? and can you post the Plex xml from one of the media files you are having trouble with ?
