"Streaming this media is unsupported" (1.14.1.5487/88/1.15.0.573)

I need help, I’m receiving the aforementioned error while I load any media from my Plex library on my PS4. Playing locally via Plex (Windows 10) it seems to work fine.

The issue started in 1.14.1.5487 and continues with 5488. Reinstalling 1.14.0.5470 has seemed to resolve the error.

EDIT 1: Just to be clear, I’m using the browser on my PS4, I then connect to 192… (address of my PC), and the Plex loads. I’m not using the Plex app.

EDIT 2: Looks like Plex considers this ready for primetime as 88 has been promoted to the public version. I cannot believe they didn’t see this very glaring issue. Either they don’t care or PS4 viewers are a tiny, tiny minority. To anyone else running into this error, the old version works, Plex-Media-Server-1.14.0.5470-9d51fdfaa.exe. It was originally on Plex’s site before they decided to promote 88. https://www.filecroco.com/download-plex-media-server/ is a link to the version. Good luck!

EDIT 3: I downloaded 1.15.0.573 and the issue continues. However, the PS4 will play nice with this server version using the PS4’s Plex App, just not the browser. Reinstalling the older version (1.14.0.5470) continues to work. I’ve found another link for it in case my previous link goes bad: https://en.vessoft.com/software/windows/download/plexms .

EDIT 4: (3/16/2019) I’m not sure when it happened, but it’s working again on PS4 browser. Recently, v6.50 of the firmware was released on PS4 and I was using v1.15.2.793 of Plex. I’ll continue to use the Plex app on the console as backup.

Could you share what specific media you tried to play when you got that error message?
Or did you get that message for all your content?

I’ve tried a variety of videos, all saved in MKV format. Let me know if you need anything more.

I have the same problem here. Bevore 1.14.1 (both betas) was everything fine. Now, a lot of mp4 videos aren’t playing with the same error. Others are working. They are not playing in the web interface and apple tv crashes. After going back to 1.14.0 everthing works again. The server is running on Synology NAS. I never had this problem before. Please fix it.

I seem to be having a lot of issues as well. In the past week I’ve notice issues with PMS (version 1.14.0.5470) not recognizing new content (maybe unrelated). Yesterday things were still playing just fine, but today I get an error when casting from the Android app to Google Chromecast. When trying to load a movie (mkv, x265) I get the error “There was an error navigating to the specified item. Please make sure you are connected to the internet and try again.” I upgraded to 1.14.1.5488 and the server is not remotely accessible at all. When browsing to :32400/web I get the initial setup screens as if there is no database.

Reverting to 1.14.0 keeps the current data, but I am back to no longer being able to stream on Android (streaming with the web works just fine).

I’m running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (good time for an upgrade) with kernel 3.13.0-147-generic

I’m going to try a backup and build a new VM, but wanted to put this out here in case others are having similar issues.

I watch things the same way, ps4 browser, with the same results. None of my media is streamable.

EDIT: Maybe something to do with them seemingly removing the AAC Audio checkbox? i know that used to be a thing.

so… after the little reminder we’re back.

1st… I’m a little confused why you use all those different 3rd party download sites. Just go to the source:
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

As for your edits above… please keep in mind that browsers are very limited in their direct playback capabilities. Any particular reason why you don’t want to use the PS4 Plex client?

As NewPlaza had proposed in his post in the other thread…

  • would you mind sharing the media info of one of the videos that won’t play (via Plex Web > video pre-play screen > … > Get Info)
  • when you attempt to play the video via browser and get this error message, can you please directly afterwards go to Plex Web and download the logs (settings > manage > troubleshooting > Download Logs) and attach the zip file here?

It sounds like Plex is giving up on the PS4 browser. Something must have changed in order to make it to stop working between v 1.14.0.5470 and 1.14.1.5487. I have no qualms with using the Plex app on the PS4, sounds like I need to get familiar with it if I want to update Plex going forward. Thanks for replying to my thread.

I don’t think there’s a particular “giving up on the PS4 browser”.
Browsers are by default not designed as media players – with the updates in recent years, companies have been working to establish some standards for a basic playback capability that doesn’t depend on browser plug-ins (in the past you had to have e.g. Quick Time, WMV, VLC or Flash plugins to be installed in your browser in order to play certain media types). The standard supported by most browsers is woven around h264 video and e.g. aac or mp3 audio.

This is why most media platforms rely on a native client that provides better support for more video, audio, subtitle types/formats/codecs.

That being said… I’m not aware of a particular change within Plex Web that could easily be pointed out as the root cause for your particular videos no longer playing via the browser. When looking around I noticed that Sony also released updates to their platform on December 12, 2018 (v 6.20). Not trying to point blame to them… just saying this could well be a combination of incompatibilities.

However… I strongly recommend to use the native Plex client. It should give you a much better playback experience!!

Suggestion: if it is recognized by the developers and knowledgeable moderators that the PS4 web browser is not adequate, why not modify the Plex web server to recognize when someone is using the PS4 web browser and create a header or a pop up whenever someone uses it, stating just what you did in your post. Why create work for yourselves if it’s already been recognized as a problem area? Or at the very least create a permanent locked post on the Forum describing this and include it in the header / popup. I have to believe that would be easier than responding to every post from somebody about this.

Or just discontinue the PS4 web browser as a platform and create a parking page that informs anybody using a pS4 browser to use the PS4 app instead.

YAY, it’s working again. See Edit 4 in the original post above.
