Stuttering on Plex for Windows

So can I be expecting some free Plex merch in the mail?

Joking aside, I’m glad my fix was able to help others and that it wasn’t an anomaly on my end.

I solved the issue my deleting the file instead of locking it. I had to login again but the stutter is gone.
I’m sure I won’t forgot to unlock it once the patch is published.

edit: nope, the stutter came back the next day

Where would I find the plex.ini file as I’m having the same issue in plex media server. I’ve scanned my whole PC and can’t find it anywhere. I obviously do have hidden files ticked but just can’t find it.

TIA

The issue is in the player app, not the server.
Anyway, plex.ini is in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex for Plex for Windows
For Plex Media Player it’s in %LOCALAPPDATA%\PlexMediaPlayer, but the file to “fix” would be storage.json in this case.

Hi all. Version 1.12.1 has been released which addresses the stuttering resolved by making plex.ini read only. The update will be automatically downloaded within ~2m of app startup. It will then be applied automatically on next app start.

Yep, a way to check for and apply updates from the user interface would be an improvement.

So, uninstalled Plex for windows, deleted my plex folder in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex. Installed 1.12.1, rebooted, and verified plex.ini is read only.
Plex for windows stutters with live TV, and there are (for a lack of better term) micro stutters in 4k.
Non 4k movies and series do not stutter.
This is not a network or processing power.
There still something buggy with Plex for windows, PMP has no issues.

Just updated & played an episode that was stuttering before and I can confirm it is no longer an issue!

The files usually have 1080p H.265 with external subtitle in Direct Play.

Thank you.

I was worried no one was looking into it. I can’t 100% say it’s fixed but I tried a video briefly with subs even and didn’t notice any stutter. I will have to look closer later when I have more time.

Hi @Paulostuff, please avoid making plex.ini read only. The synchronous disk writing occurring pre 1.12.1 has been addressed. I don’t have any suggestions for the other issues you mentioned.

Hi Mattseeley
I installed the 1.12.1 update. The stuttering has reduced, but not gone entirely. The video still gets stuck every few seconds. Which means the issue has still not resolved with the 1.12.1 update, only reduced. I played a 10bit HEVC file to check for your info.

Thank You for this solution Navipar! It works with Plex for Windows! Finally a working solution till Plex comes up with something more permanent for their Windows App.

Thank You Danmala for your solution! It works with PMP just as you stated!

Thank you everyone! Stuttering is gone! :grinning:

This would be good to spin into a new thread. Maybe this is hw decoding or maybe there’s something else. We’ll need logs, sample file, and generally information to try to reproduce.

The hwdecode/opengl settings do fix the issue as well, not sure exactly why.
As I’ve stated in my post Stuttering on Plex for Windows - #50 by navipar i was more focused on understanding why on default settings there were stuttering issues.
Thankfully by noted from other people in here, it was related to the file plex.ini being locked/unlocked, causing disk writes constantly and for some reason this causes constant stuttering during playback.

In my post i’ve noticed that for PMP the file that gets locked/unlocked is storage.json so i personally set it to read-only as well and it fixed the issue on PMP. Maybe @b_maganlal_yahoo.com could test this solution by leaving the opengl/hwdecode settings as default and report back?

Ummmm what exactly you wish me to do? as far as I know I am not the only one still encountering these stutters in Plex for Windows even after the 1.12,1 update, as can be seen in the below attached query by Paulostuff…

Yes Navipar, your solution of making storage.json read only also seems to have stopped the stuttering

I updated to 1.12.1 and I am still getting the stuttering. It might not be as bad as it was before, but it is still there.

I had the stuttering for a long while now, both windows and xbox. I am happy to report that the stuttering is no longer a problem after today’s update - since no video will play at all.

Great job, everyone, for testing you code in production. Again.

Also another thing that is happening after the 1.12.1 update is that whatever I was watching before the update is what keeps displaying on the Keep Watching and On Deck tabs, and no amount of Mark as Played makes it go away.
