Stuttering on Plex for Windows

didn’t work for me :frowning:

This is still an issue.

Sadly, I’m having this issue too. Plex has been fairly bulletproof for me up until this. Hoping the team can resolve it soon.

HELP this is horrible its driving me crazy

I to am having this issue with Plex for Windows. Using phone, TV’s or browser interface all content plays smoothly.

Hi @deactivated
Just wondering if there will be an updated version of PlexMediaPlayer that will address this stuttering issue? I’m on PMP version 2.58.0.1076 and this issue has been driving me nuts for months. It would be amazing if you guys could fix this issue on PMP as well.

Hi @deactivated
I can confirm that changing the file storage.json to read-only makes the playback smooth again on PlexMediaPlayer. No more stuttering. Hopefully this information can help you create an update for PMP that adresses this issue.

Hi @deactivated, I couldn’t test so much since the update that should have fixed the plex.ini issue.

Today I finally had time to try the new fixes and I can confirm there’s been an improvement, the stream is smoother, but there are still micro-stuttering happening.
What I’m saying is the issue is still there but the frequency of the stuttering is lower, which is good, but still noticeable and annoying.

So I have tried again to flag plex.ini as read-only and the stuttering disappeared as before.
My verdict, while it has been improved, it’s not totally fixed.

I couldn’t test PMP but I suppose the same thing happens there with the storage.json file instead, as noted above.

I share my specifications as well just in case:

Plex for Windows Version: 1.17.0.1376-439f8b7f
CPU: i5-2500K
RAM: 16 GB
Motherboard: Asus P67 SABERTOOTH
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050 Ti
Network: 1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet
HDD: 1 TB Seagate Barracuda

i have the same issue but only on movies that i ripped that have forced sub. Like in BAD BOYS FOR LIFE. there is a lot of Spanish so when i ripped the movie i set it to forced subs. So when the Spanish comes up the subs only show for that part not the rest of the movie. looks like for me only these movies are skipping under regular video quality if i lower the video quality then it plays fine but looks like crap.

did you notice if it was transcoding or direct play? Using the full plex for windows client should allow for direct play most of the time.

i looked all over and i cant find a place for direct play. but i am on the same network as my server.

look on the dashboard of the server while it is playing

I don’t use Plex Media Player for windows much, but I used it today and it had an update. I updated to 1.18.0.1392-cf94f6a1 and then watched some live TV (direct stream). I noticed stuttering and then found this thread. I didn’t see stuttering before, but like I said, I really don’t use the windows player. I checked and the stuttering was not present in the web player, and I also looked and found the plex.ini file was not locked. I locked it and the stuttering is gone. This is STILL an issue, at least with this version.

After three months since the issue was completely solved by a user, it’s still there in my version 1.19 and changing file attrs to RO still helps. Ironic slow clap for the dev team.

I had stopped using the desktop app because of this issue in April. Checked every time there was an update to see the issue again. Thanks to @JamesKrauseIII for finding the fix.
