I am having an issue with the “{\an8}” command in my SRT subtitles. It is supposed to be a hidden command that tells the subtitles to display the line at the top of the screen instead of the bottom. This function works properly in my Windows based apps, but not in my Smart TV (LG) app. I am not sure if this is a bug, or if its something as simple as a setting that I have to change, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
This “positioning” code is normally used in ASS subtitles. It may just happen to be working fine in a SRT file in some players. (Usually if the video player app in question does also have support for ASS subtitles. – i.e. Kodi et.al.)
However, it is not guaranteed to work in all kinds of players.
Sorry for my poor wording. When I said it works in my Windows based apps, I meant it worked on my Plex app on my computer. That means Plex does know how to support it. It’s just only doing so on my PC and not my TV. Is that still a matter of some players support it and others don’t, or might there be a setting that is off by default on the TV but on by default on the PC app?
Yes. The Plex client is just using the functionality of the underlying operating system, in this case the TV’s OS.
If the player in the TV doesn’t support this, Plex can’t do anything about it – except activating transcoding. Which then enables the server to “burn-in” the subtitles at the right position, at the cost of a high server load.
