Subtitle settings for "Local Subtitles"

Server Version#: v1.25.3.5448 (on Nvidia Shield TV Pro)
Player Version#: 8.29.0.30433 com.plexapp.android

Hi all,
very new to Plex Media Server and after some help.
I often have a season of a TV show which has separate English .srt subtitle files for each episode.
eg;
TV Show X S01E01.mp4
TV Show X S01E01.srt

TV Show X S01E02.mp4
TV Show X S01E02.srt

I followed the steps in Adding Local Subtitles to Your Media | Plex Support for adding “Local Subtitles”, but Plex still wanted to search the Internet for subs, despite the local ones already sitting in the same folder right next to the .mp4 file.

I found some obscure Youtube which told me I had to go into Settings > Languages and set “Prefer subtitles in Unknown” to get Plex to recognise them.

I did this and it worked - Plex started using the local subs I had.

Why do you have to Prefer subtitles in “Unknown” instead of “English” to get PMS to see and use them?
These are my current settings - have I got something set incorrectly?

Try naming your srt file to .en.srt that is if the subs are english

I will give that a try and let you know how I go - cheers. :grinning:

the subtitle can either be subtitle.eng.srt or subtitle.en.srt.

The server is selecting the file named subtitle.srt because you have “Unknown” configured in the Languages settings. The subtitles without a language identifier are considered unknown, so technically, it’s doing exactly what you asked it to…

Once you have all of your subtitles renamed with the language, all of your settings should be set to English, and it should work as expected.

You will likely have to refresh metadata for the show for the subtitles to show up and work properly.

That seems to have worked a treat by adding “.eng” before “.srt”.

Thanks very much to you both. :+1:
