Subtitle styling gone

Android app.
Shared servers, home server, suddenly I can’t change the subtitle styling. This is really important because I’m hard of hearing.
The size slider does nothing, the text stays tiny, and the color options are gone.

What version number exactly of app are you running? When you open up settings it will show at the bottom. What type of subs? is the video transcoding?

App version 8.5.1.19778
All srt subs
I don’t know what “is the video transcoding” means, everything e
is playing normally aside from this issue

During playback open up the menu and chose Playback Info instead of Playback Settings The line for video will say , Direct play,Direct stream, or transcoding. Transcoding means converting the video which could be for reasons of network speed, quality settings or video stream compatibility for device. styling can’t be done to transcoded video because it will convert the subtitles to be part of the image.

It’s transcoding. This is new. Any way to change it? I’ve already got it set to “original quality”

There should be a line on that same menu that says transcode reason.

What does this mean

That was actually one with an ASS file.
This is the other, I don’t understand

ASS subtitles are the same as the SSA they have styles set inside them. In the app setting go to Settings>advanced>subtitles and enable “override included subtitle styling”

It might have taken too long for playvack to load direct play for some reason so it fell back to transcoding. Might be something funky with file
