Just tried out the sharing feature and it worked surprisingly well, but without subtitles it’s unfortunately unusable for the people I’m trying to share with.
Care to be a little more specific?
What are the subtitle formats and what devices are they trying to play on? Supported subtitle types work fine for my shared users. Are they trying to direct stream/play your media or allowing the transcoder to do its thing?

When my sister uses the Plex client on her iPad to watch a series shared by me, she can’t select a subtitle stream. I think Plex even says that subtitles are not supported for shared media. I believe that is what steven_D means.
When I watch media from my friends I get their subtitles. So that isn't true. I suspect there is a bug here somewhere in that case. If you try to play from your iPhone (if you have one) you can't see subtitles? In that case, which type of subtitles are they? srt subtitles works just fine for me.
It’s my understanding that indeed for shared media you can’t change the subtitle stream on the server.

The post where samukas links to describes the issue correctly. My sister can’t select subs for media I share with her. However, if i have previously selected subs for an episode, she gets to see those (which is our current workaround).

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (if subtitles are available -> embedded, local files, on-demand… those will apply as per the shared user’s language preferences)
