Subtitle streams do not work in Plex Media Player ONLY

I posed this question in the Plex Media Player Preview Releases category but haven’t had much luck, so I figured I’d share it in the general public category.

I recently upgraded from Plex Home Theater, which I love, to Plex Media Player, due to PHT’s inability to play video files with EAC3 tracks, at least on my system.

I’ve had no issues with audio since moving to PMP, but I continue to have an ongoing subtitle issue. In short, I cannot select a subtitle stream, as I receive a “There was a problem selecting the stream for this item” error. I receive this error all the time, no matter which video I am trying to play or even if it has multiple subtitle files.

The only luck I’ve had in getting subtitles to play through PMP is to rename the subtitle file so that they become forced subtitles. After doing this, the subtitles default to “On”, but I then cannot turn them off, as I receive the same “problem selecting the stream” error.

I have not experienced this issue on the web app, iOS apps, Roku, or even when I go back to PHT. Has anyone else had this issue? Know of a fix?

I’ve included a screenshot of the error and can also upload log files if needed. Appreciate the help!

I have this same issue, and have also had no luck getting any love d]from the dev’s in the plex pass support forums since I reported it two months ago.

Would love an update from the dev’s to know what’s being done about it, it’s kind of a critical bug that makes media player pretty useless for me!

I have the exact same issue… can we get more voice behind this please! I would love a response from a dev.

Another bump… Come on dev’s the continued silence is pretty annoying! My subscription comes up in a few weeks and I’m seriously at the point of not renewing without some clarity.

Bumping this, as well. This issue is quite annoying. I never realized how often I watched things with subs on, but now that I can’t even turn them on, it’s become more apparent than ever. How is a legacy application that is no longer updated/supported (Plex Home Theater) better able to handle this than Plex’s shiny new Media Player? A fix is needed ASAP!

Does this only happen with media files with SRT subtitles or also with PGS subtitles? Are the subtitles embedded into the media file or individual files saved right next to the media item?

In my particular experience, I have only tried with media files that had SRT subtitles - both embedded into the media, and then with individual subs that I’ve downloaded to determine if the issue was with the embedded subs. Doesn’t work either way. The application does not allow me to select any subtitle streams. And, if I were to download individual subs and change the filename in order to force them on, they do default to on, but then I am unable to turn them off.

So, at this point, it basically means I’d need to download separate subtitle files for all of my media, change the file names to force them on when I wanted to watch with subs, and change the file names back when I don’t want them on. Not exactly an elegant solution.
