I have noticed that on the new Plex version (updated Oct 2017) the subtitles load well and suddenly stop working. Reactivating the subtitles make them return… but not permanently.
Came here to post about this. Reactivation is one way I get them to work again, also if you just wait out 1 or 2 minutes they come back up again (for a while) but it’s really annoying. Didn’t have that problem with the previous version.
@Moussa If I can be of any help by grabbing logs or what have you, please let me know. The app is unusable at the moment; hard of hearing and cannot watch without subs. FWIW, it happens with both built in and external subs.

Just a thought have you tried switching the mode of the subtitles to Always burned in? This setting is under the video->subtitles section. Switching it to Always burned in should make them behave exactly like before while the sidecar subtitle is investigated.

I hadn’t thought to, but I’ll give it a shot. Though with the MKV playback issues, I’ve mainly switched over to Chromecast & my laptop for the time being.

FWIW - this appears to have fixed the issue for me.
It also appears to have decreased the amount of power the transcoder was using when streaming to the Xbox One app. Not 100% certain that this change fixed that as well, but previously my computer’s CPU was going haywire trying to send a 9.6 Mbps stream to the TV (switching down to 8 seemed to alleviate the issue). After forcing the Xbox One app to always burn in the subtitles, there are no longer any buffering issues @ 9.6 Mbps and CPU usage appears way down on my laptop.

That fixed it for me as well. What’s the drawback of using that option if both were working properly (hypothetically)?

The big difference is that Burned in subtitles always force a video transcode as the subtitles are burned into the video stream before sending the file. When the bug with sidecar subtitles is fixed transcoding the video will not be needed as the subtitles get sent as a separate stream from the video.
The main benefit is that it allows less powerful servers to use subtitles. For more powerful servers the difference most likely won’t be noticed, but the CPU on the server will not have to work anywhere near as hard.
subtitles in Chrome Web App stop working after about 4 minutes.
Tried with server versions 1.9.6.4385 and 1.9.6.4401.
Stopping (close player, not just pause) and resuming the video fixes it for another few minutes.
Nothing wrong with the subtitles themselves.
Have tested many different videos (all MKV containers, external SRT subtitle files).
After a few tests, I realized this problem doesn’t occur if the (external) subtitle is encoded in the UTF-8. It’s a bummer that most subtitles we find online are encoded in Windows-1252…
BTW, the problem is still present for srt embedded into the MKV, even if they are UTF-8 (which the container requires).

Always Burn doesn’t do anything to prevent the problem with SRT from happening.
XBox One and Synology, here…
Is your server able to transcode video? If not then that would be why always burn doesn’t work as the server needs to transcode the video to burn the subtitles.
I came here to post this issue. Also, fast forwarding is a PAIN now. You have to manually click the fast forward button to skip 30 secs in a movie. I think I had to restart the movie 30 times, makes it unwatchable. If it helps, here are the logs. Tried to watch Good Bye Lenin

Actually, last night I discovered that using the bumpers on the controller to go back 30s re-enabled the subtitles. I “think” it did. I was almost finished the show when I discovered that and didn’t try again. Will test again when I get home.

I have tried the Always Burn fix and it didn’t help for me. I assume my home server can transcode, but, how would I be able to tell if it wasn’t able to?
After the update on Xbox One, the subtitles disappears during playback of movie / serie.
I have to tap the left joystick pro movie / series back a bit and it reappears.
But minutes later it disappears again and that is very annoying.
