New app: external subtitles are disappearing after few minutes

Hi, I have updated the Plex app on my xbox one (old xbox). I have got issues with the external subtitles which disappear after playing around 7 minutes. I have to go back to the menu, then continue from watching and it goes well.
Can you fix this issue ? It was working fine with the old app.
Regards,

The developers are aware of the issue and are looking at fixing it.

The reason it worked in the old app was because the app had to burn in every subtitle. With the update to the UWP app text based subtitles (such as SRT’s) are sent along with the video and audio streams so the server does not need to transcode the video.

@jmckee any update on this bug?

“Subtitles disappear after a few minutes of playback.
Workaround: Disable Allow Direct Play and Allow Direct Stream in app Settings -> Video to force a transcode.”

Unfortunately, Ninja’s don’t have access to the internal bug tracker either so all I know is that it is a main priority being looked into, but have no additional information about it.

Alternatively, in the subtitle settings under video in the app you can switch the subtitle mode from automatic to always burned. This forces the subtitles to behave how they did in the prior app.

Doesn’t work.
Been testing this one multiple files.
Unless there’s an added layer of problem that I’m yet to identify.

Hopefully this will be resolved soon. Have to keep pausing the video and disabling/enabling subtitles to get them back every few minutes.

Are either of you using a server that is unable to transcode? Because if you switch the subtitle settings to always burn in the Xbox app the functionality is restored to how it behaved in the old app. But if your server is unable to transcode then it will appear that there are no subtitles playing.

You guys should REALLY be clearer in your workarounds.
This fixed the problem.
Never realized that I could and had to do those settings in the XBox App.
Thought that by doing them through a browser, it would change the server settings, and thus be server wide…

When Moussa told me to do that, under Settings / Video, it wasn’t clear he talked Xbox side.
I did it through Plex Web, and was concerned that Burn and Direct Play were under Debugging.
Didn’t inspire confidence but I thought that, having so many on his plate to deal with, he did that off the top of his head.

Seriously Plex, you should be more specific or add screen caps for people to find the solution.
Hell, I never realized I had to do settings on my XBox One.
Which begets the question, why do I have to do it in XBox App TOO, if I had it done on the server settings?
Why would settings client side overrule those of the server?

Anyway, aside from the general weirdness and problems of that update, THANKS A LOT for that solution to my main subtitles problem.

Because this is a topic in the Xbox One sub-forum we run under the assumption that the issue is with the Xbox One app. Any fix or workaround suggested in this sub-forum will always be in the Xbox One app unless it is specifically specified elsewhere.

The server has no settings that control this. What you are looking at from the web manager is the settings for the web player. Those changes will only affect the web player, and more specifically only the browser that you made then changes in. These changes do not carry over to the Xbox One (Or even to other browsers IE from chrome to firefox)

With that all being said, I did update the known work around’s page to be more clear. If any of them still don’t make sense, either reply here or send me a direct message and I can try and figure out how to make it more clear for everybody.

v2.0.4 should now be available to you all, which includes a fix for the subtitle issue. You can find the release notes here.

Oops, posting bug.
Will update with intended content.

This update has not fixed the problem.

@“Home Media Library” please try updating Plex Media Server to the just released 1.9.6.4429. It should fix an issue with subtitles disappearing on seeks.

Thanks @Moussa I’ll give that a try. Although on mine they were disappearing without seeking, they’d just stop randomly on their own. I’ll let you know if the server update sorts it when I get a chance to test.

This latest update hasn’t solved the problem (I’m running 1.9.7.4441). Regression, maybe?

BTW, I switched subtitle burning to “Always”. I won’t direct play or stream anymore, but at least the subtitles are there.

on latest 1.9.7.4460 and still have the issue. Subs keep cutting out but strangely not all shows. Must be the way the subs are written. Also if I just play them on my iPad no issues. Only when I cast it to my Chromecast does it happen. Work around doesn’t work. Plus could only find an option for Direct Play not Direct Stream. Gonna try the Always burn instead of automatic.

Are you seeing this issue on the Xbox One as well or just the Chromecast?

A fix was released in the Plex pass server version: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1563954/#Comment_1563954

Otherwise, the fix Moussa implemented for the Xbox One app won’t have any affect on the other apps.

I’m having the same problems described above.
Subtitles disappear after a while and I can’t seem to get them back, the work on other devices/web etc.
Plex for Xbox One 2.0.5.70
PMS 1.9.7.4460 (PlexPass Lifetime)

I’ve tried unchecking “Allow Direct Play” and I’ve also tried Burn Subtitles - Always but it doesn’t help, problem persists.
This only happens for MKV with embedded SRT.
