Subtitles stop working after a short time in MKV

When playing an MKV with embedded subtitles, after a short time of watching, the subtitles stop being displayed.

Switching from Forced SRT to SRT, or back again, seems to make the subs show again for a little while, but then they stop appearing again.

Running latest (1.9.4.4325) version on Windows 10, and playback on MacOS web player (3.20.7).

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

…and when I say “short time”, it’s normally anywhere between 45 seconds and 1 minute.

i have the same problem, i did see that it was noticed before in 1.9.1. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/288543/subtitles-arent-showing-up-since-the-update-to-1-9-1-4272-yesturday

is there any workaround? it seems that not everybody has this issue because then the priority to fix this would be higher.

Same issue here. When i start a Movie and watch it non stop until the end, no problem with subtitles. Do i stop the movie and resume it later on, then I only have subtitles for only around 1 minute, until the subtitle stops.
Same with series.

BUMP for more attention. Subtitles show intermittently at best. I’ve tried re-installing/reformatting, multiple video file types, external subs, internal subs, nothing works.

Haaaalllppppp

Setting subtitles to Always burn, fixed it for now.

I have the same problem. Quite annoying.

Hi,

subtitles in Chrome Web App stop working after about 4 minutes.
Tried with server versions 1.9.6.4385 and 1.9.6.4401.
Stopping (close player, not just pause) and resuming the video fixes it for another few minutes.
Nothing wrong with the subtitles themselves.
Have tested many different videos (all MKV containers, external SRT subtitle files).

No issue with the Apple TV Plex app, both current release and newest Beta.

This issue started a few months ago for me, and I notice it frequently as well. Web player and Plex HT player.

same as zillon,
i can add that some times if i go back 20 second clicking two times the icon the subtitle get back and work a wile.
this annoying problem is present now from almos three months.

FIXED ! Web Player 3.27.1 (included in Media Server 1.9.6.4429) fixes the problem for the Web Player in Chrome. Thanks @Devs !

Little issue: with 1.9.6.4429, I always have transcode x264 (hw to hw) instead of Direct Streaming for the videos (same videos, same condition were Direct Streamed in 1.8.4)…

… and then again some streams play Direct as before. Go figure… (P.S.: auto quality disabled)

1.9.7.4460: movies don’t get cut after 30 minutes anymore, but now subtitles stop working again after 30 minutes. Repeatedly. Every few minutes.
Come on guys… about time to fix this. Back to 1.9.6 for me…

1.10.0.4516: still losing subtitles, now after about 40 minutes… and back to 1.9.6 for me… again…

The only workaround I’ve got for this issue is to set burn subtitles to always. This also means the videos will be transcoded, not really an issue for me but might be for some people running on slower hardware.

Has 1.10.0.4523 fixed this for anyone?

1.10.1.4561 resolves all subtitles problems for me on Web Player (Chrome on Windows), IOS and TVOS.
However, another issue appear in recent builds: pausing a show for too long near the end of the episode causes Plex to display Network Error “shaka1001”, close the video player and go back to the episodes list…

Having problems with subtitles too, they stop working after some time, switching them off and back on makes them work again but after a while they stop working again.

Still losing subtitles when skipping forward or back a few times near the end of a TV show episode; still getting Shaka1001 (Network) error when pausing during the last few minutes of a TV show…
