Subtitles displaying wrong language characters

So, to get things started. I’m moving over to RapidSeedbox in order to set up my own Netflix type thing. I also have a non-English speaking wife. I’m trying to figure out this subtitle thing, and it’s not going over well.

I’ve gotten to the point where the subtitles display over the movie, however, the characters are all wrong and cause massive confusion.

I’ve tried downloading language packs, tested it on mobile, tried different movies, I’ve set languages and language preferences through Plex as well and still having the same issue. I’m not sure if the issue occurs with other languages, because I wouldn’t really know any others. I guess my question would be in order to have this automated to the fullest, is there a way I can choose another source for subtitles other than opensubtitles.org?

Are you using the opensubtitle agent to automatically obtain subtitles? If so, it’s possible that the file is wrong. PMS requires subtitles encoded with utf-8, if not, what you describe can occur.

An alternative option is to use the 3rd party SubZero subtitle agent. This can pull subtitles from other sources.

Is Subzero integrated into Plex? My biggest concern is having this work near perfection when I move everything to a seedbox.
