When using SRT subs with burn in set to “Auto” the subs fade out after a few seconds.
They do work if I set it to forced burn in, but as this drops me from 4k hdr to 1080p I don’t want to resort to that…
Looks like your server version might be the web-app version … Should be 1.22.x or 1.23.x.
SRT definitely should play natively so burn shouldn’t be necessary. Can you describe what “fade out” means in a bit more detail?
Do they just stop displaying after a few lines? One setting that definitely does this is if you have “instant replay” set in Roku for when to display closed captioning (subs). It will only show subs for a few lines after you hit replay\rewind and then stop showing them.
Also, make sure your language settings are how you like them for your account and the library. If those are off, that can definitely have an impact. Here are my account settings for example:
Plex for Roku has a newer feature that manages the Roku subtitle settings so it should be swapping it on/off when necessary as well (which is a huge improvement). It looks like you’re on the right version for that so shouldn’t be an issue either - but sometimes Roku needs a little help and maybe the Roku 10 OS kicked in for you… might try pulling the power cable on it to make sure it does a clean reboot.
Thanks!
It was the replay setting in Roku - what an odd setting to have as default (brand new Roku).
The “fade out” was meaning that rather than just suddenly cutting out you do see the subtitled slowly get more opaque and then disappear, but clearly this is a feature of Roku.
That setting is actually very handy and is unique to Roku.
On Replay means that if the subtitles are On, the Roku Setting of On Replay means that while the subs are technically on, they won’t display unless you back up, or hit ‘Replay’ on the remote to back up 10 seconds. The subs will display until you get to the spot where you were - then they fade out - so you can catch something you missed.
I have my subs set in my Plex account to Always Enabled and the Roku set to On Replay. On Replay can’t work if the subs are off, so keep that in mind as well.
It was common for Closed Caption setup on TVs so I think with Roku using CC for all subtitle support we got it as a feature for subtitles as well. Definitely can be very handy.
