TCL Roku TV Disappearing Subtitles

Server Version#: Version 4.66.1
Player Version#: Version 6.9 Build 4

I am experiencing this on two separate Roku TVs but not on PC, or on my Phone, and people who are accessing my server are not having this issue on their devices as well.

I have no subtitles on movies when I turn them on. If once I am in the movie I go and change to a different subtitle file, it will show the subtitles for a second or two then they disappear again. If I hit the skip back button, which skips back 20 seconds, it will show the subtitles for the full 20 seconds before they fade away.

This tells me it has to be some setting but I have gone through the help files and gone through the settings on both the TVs and the web apps and I just cannot find it. This was not an issue until about a week ago or so, so I have no idea what changed but it’s driving me nuts.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It sounds like the “Instant Replay” mode is enabled. This is a global Roku option. Have a look at this support article to make the change and set it to “On” or “Off”.

You can change this option in the Roku overlay, while the video is playing by pressing the * button. When changed from here (during playback), make sure you set to On.

You can also change this from the Roku home screen → Settings → Accessibility → Captions Mode. You can set this to Off or On. That is, if you have subtitles selected for the media, then we’ll enable subtitle during that playback, and set the captions mode back to what is was previously once playback is stopped.

note: this is a global option, so if you changing it in other channels affects all channels.
