Subtitles need improvements

Probably discussed a billion times on this forum, but I just want remind the devs that subtitle selection / downloading is still terrible. I installed sub zero, which is the best option available to get subs. However it still misses often, especially with TV shows.

In Plex I want to be able to see ALL subtitles available for a specific language. Not just one single match, found by subzero. And if no match, you should still be able to select the other subtitle versions available on opensubtitles.org.

I like Plex but because of this, I’m using Kodi more often lately.

you might want to take a look at the new subtitle feature:
https://www.plex.tv/blog/subtitles-and-sunsets-big-improvements-little-housekeeping/

Availability might depend on the client you use.
With the latest version of Plex Web, when selecting a subtitle, you should get an extra More button that’ll show the available subtitles for your language incl. a rating (currently based on opensubtitles.org only)

Actually great news ! But I can’t find “Settings” in my player. The whole menu is missing
and I’m running the desktop app on OSX, TV mode. On my TV I have AndroidTV version 8 running wiht Plex. So I hope it will be available there.

Does my server need an update for this feature or just the latest client ? I’m using plex beta on synology RTD1296

  • Click the ... button (right of the play and trailer buttons).
  • In the subsequent popup you can select/change the audio and subtitle tracks (-> click Change Subtitles)
  • Plex shows all the subtitles embedded in the file or available as local files first – scroll to the very bottom of that list to find the More... button and click it
  • select the online subtitle of your choice

Ok, … I see. But I don’t have the “More” option. I guess it’s because my plex client did not update yet (Android TV). Yesterday it did not update, but maby today

I have version 7.6.1.7056 on my Android tv. But the new subtitle option is still missing ??

It is perfectly possible that this feature hasn’t been enabled on your user account, yet.
It will be slowly rolled out over the next few days.

And even after it has been activated for you, your server needs to get the information that it has been activated.
And for that to happen, it needs to contact plex.tv
While it will do that periodically, it might still take too long for you.
You can provoke this contact to plex.tv by

  • quit plex server
  • wait a few seconds
  • start plex server

Whether the feature is present you can determine by using the current ‘hosted’ web
app https://app.plex.tv/desktop
Open the preplay page of any movie or tv show episode and look for the ‘More…’ item under the subtitle selector.
If it is present, the feature has been activated for your user account.

Thanks the tips. But will my Plex server also need An update in order for this feature to work? My server is running the beta version for synology nas with rtdt1296 CPU. And i’m not sure any updates Will be available soon?

The required minimum server version is listed in this article:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/subtitle-search/

Damn … The beta version for synology ARMv8 is 1.13.6.176.
Do you have any clue when it goes out of beta ? Are we talking about weeks or months ?

Best regards,

Maarten

You have a Plex Pass. So you can install beta versions if you need them urgently.

I don’t get it … The only version available for ARMv8 processor is beta version 1.13.6.176. Right ? And it is only available for plex pass users.

Or am I missing something ?

Use the official package for your Syno model.
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/

Don’t look for those super-duper special builds, which only exist to test the future release toolchain.

Don’t want to offend you, but are you working for Plex?
Are you actually aware of the fact that the official package ARMv7 is not compatible with ARMv8 ??

If you have a model which has an ARM v8 cpu, then you have to wait until this cpu is officially supported.
This will be the case once the new build system has been certified as ready for production.
Until then, unfortunately you’ll have to make do with the PMS version available as a ‘preview’.

Any indication when it will be supported officially?

No date set, yet.

I am running Plex server version 1.13.9.5456
In player (web player, windows plex player, iOS) I do not have option “more” to download more subtitles.

I did made setup for subtitles, configured opensubtitles.org so everything looks good from config side but still, not “more” option.

I do not have plex premium account.

Any suggestions?
