I am watching the series Fargo, Season 1, episode 1, and the subtitles I choose from OpenSubtitles do not sync with the video. I have tried a few different ones, and none of them match. I am watching on a Roku Ultra.
Is there anything I can do?

On other platforms you could use the option to adjust the subtitle offset.

I would generally recommend to rip subtitles right from the source… if that’s an option.
How would we know if that’s an option for the Fargo series I am watching on Roku Ultra? And how would I rip subtitles if it is an option?
The Roku client doesn’t support changing the offset for subtitles (see list of supported devices in the support article linked above).
Software will usually allow you to select which tracks of a file to store in your output — including subtitles.
Thanks for the tip on the Roku. What software are you talking about where you can select tracks? I download the mkv and mp4 files using Safari on my Mac Mini.
You select the track in Plex.
If the file you downloaded doesn’t have subtitles you need to find some. Many people use FileBot to find subtitles and then Subtitle Edit to clean up said subtitles. If you’re and extra mile kind of person you would use MKVToolNix to put the subtitle inside of the .mkv container.
Thanks for the advice, but that sounds like a lot more trouble than I am willing to put in just to get subtitles.
Well I changed my mind, since I found that VLC will create an SRT file for you, it is just not synced with the video, at least not in Fargo Season 1 Episode 1.
My question now is this: what is the best easy-to-use software to automatically sync the SRT files with the video?
See my previous comment about how to “clean up said subtitles.”
Will Subtitle Edit automatically sync the SRT file with the video?
No. No program will.
Plex has a feature to sync subtitles, but it’s not perfect.
Not entirely true.
SubSync, https://subsync.online/, can attempt to sync the the subtitles using either a good subtitle file or the audio as a source.
It probably works in a similar way to what Plex does so like Plex’s feature, do not expect 100% accuracy but from my experience using SubSync it generally does a good enough job.

Thanks. I’ll give it a try.
It can do that, if you have another good subtitle file on which it can align the text.
For instance if your movie only came with English subs and you are trying to sync subs in a different language. This approach works best if you pick very short lines to align. One at the very beginning and one at the very end. This way even subs from different frame rate versions can be aligned. (e.g. PAL DVD vs. Bluray)
