Subtitles On Desktop App random symbols

Server Version#: 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#: 1.2.0.875-b7362913
On phone subtitles work fine but the Plex DesktopApp on PC messes up subtitles in my language (random symbols in the middle of sentemce) I tried looking on forums for the subtitles problem an there is no fix… Do you know how to fix this?

The DesktopApp do this on both local or automatically downloaded subtitles.

Theres picture of what iam talking about:

Make sure the SRT file uses the UTF-8 text encoding.
All SRT subtitles for use in Plex should be checked/converted.

Or: this line looks like it was inserted by opensubtitles.org as an advert.
When they do that, they sometimes mess up an otherwise fine SRT file, by using the wrong text encoding for the inserted text.
If this advertisement is the only instance of wrong characters, you can ignore it.

But how do i know what encoding subtitles use? I have set plex to automatically download them from opensubtitles. And how do i convert these faulty subtitles ?

Text editor software nowadays can show you the encoding and change it. (SRT files are just text)

If you have an up-to-date Windows 10, even notepad.exe can show the encoding and ‘Save as…’ utf-8.
If you still use older versions of Windows, I recommend notepad++.

There is also ‘Subtitle Edit’ which even can convert a whole folder and its subfolders full of SRT files.

There are similar tools for all other major PC operating systems as well.

Okay thanks… But what about subtitles that Plex download automatically ?

I am told this should be taken care of automatically.

So what do i do ? It keeps downloading subtitiles like this…

Is the whole subtitle affected or only those advertisements?

The whole subtitles. It´s really annoying. But it´s only happening on Desktop App. On the WebApp subtitles dissapear after around 30 second (But thats for other topic. btw i cant find solutoin on that too) On MobileApp everything works fine.

Is there any chance you could get me one of these subtitle files?

If you have WebTools installed, you can even fetch those subtitles which were downloaded on-demand from a Plex client.

Iam curently trying to install WebTools. And can you give me some tips on how to use SubtitleEdit?

There are Czech subtitles.
I downloaded them not Plex.
The link is just cloud where you can upload stuff.

Could you please simply ZIP this file and drag it into the message editor in this forum?

This weird website wants me to load dozens of javascript into my browser and I won’t let it.

Here you go.

Thor.Ragnarok.2017.720p.BluRay.x264-[YTS.AM].rar (37.5 KB)

Have you verified that this file does exhibit the issues?
Because it looks to me like a well-formed UTF-8 document.

I’ve also added it to a movie and it plays well in the new player app.

I will reinstall the Player. Can you try this subtitles please ? In found these wierd symbols in them in SubtitleEdit.

AfterEarth SLO.rar (18.1 KB)

This subtitle file is damaged. I assume it was those opensubtitles people when they added their advertisement to it.

Yeah. I downloaded this subtitles from WebTools. This downloaded Plex. Is something better than opensubtitles that this doesnt happen again ?

It´s still doing on some films where the subtitles are downloaded automatically

Try this: [REL] SRT2Utf-8

And if you play this same video with PMP or the web app, the issue does not occur?
