Subtitles settings (font, color, offset time, position)

The Windows client has settings for Subtitle Color, Position, Size and Offset, but they’re all greyed-out, un-selectable. The Roku client (at least on my Roku Express), doesn’t have any of these available, at least, not that I’ve been able to find.

In almost all Apple client such as Apple TV, iPhone, iPadOS, there’s no subtitle setting menus. Other players such as infuse, nplayer support even the 3rd party fonts as well as their change in styles.

Please enhance the subtitle style features!

I would really like “Bottom” to be a bit higher as the Player on OSX has the overlay for play controls popping up all the time if you move the mouse and it obscures the subtitles. If I could just have bottom above the controls overlay I would be happy.

Hey BigWheel! Are there any hope for subtitle flexible position implementation?

None of these settings work on my Shield when the content is in HDR. :frowning:

If I could make a recommendation on the offset…add a slider bar or at least a box where you can input millisecond total change…so i dont have to click 150 times to change the offset by 15 seconds? or some such.

It’s essential to have the option to change the subtitle FONT. The default font might work in English or other Latin languages, but It isn’t useful with Arabic, Persian, or other Right-to-Left languages. Also, there should be simple settings to offset and control the background transparency.

Why do some subtitles support all adjustment functions, some subtitles support only individual functions, and others do not support all adjustment functions? With the same system settings. (Plex for Android TV)

The position has three options not reasonable, I hope there can be more subtle adjustment, the lowest now is not really the lowest, can also be lower, The adjustment space is too limited to be meaningful. (Plex for Android TV and Mac)

I think could be nice to have the ability to change the subtitle color on every platform, for me I would like to set as default the color on my subtitles for example to yellow. I have roku where I can set the color but need to change on every single movie or tv show, not able to do that on ATV…
Any way is cool to have so many feature on Plex, but feel like this is to basic to not be present

For many years we have wanted subtitle options

Android tv - tizn tv

1- Control the subtitle position, not the top, bottom, middle
2- Add more fonts
3- Controlling the subtitle edge style (shadow - outline - and others
4- Control the size of the shadow and the outline

It doesn’t seem like this request is high on the priority list, but I just cast a vote to add what little visibility to this that I can. I would really love to see a scope safe subtitle option (moves the position to the bottom of 2.35:1 or 2.39:1 video). Or alternatively the option to globally adjust the position to a specific part of the screen. But it seems like it would be easier from an implementation standpoint to just add a fixed option which would always be in frame for scope content. Surely this wouldn’t be too hard to add given that it’s just adjusting the already existing options to allow for a new option? I recently got a video processor for my projector (Lumagen) which can automatically shift the video up when it detects subtitles but it’s super annoying as it squashes the video or cuts off the top of the video and switches back to the correct format when the subtitles disappear. I know projector users are probably a small minority but this would be a huge quality of life improvement.

I’m a Windows desktop user and it’d be nice if I could change the subtitle font and set the preferred text encoding.

On Windows, the issue has already been manageable for a long time. Just don’'t use the Web app, but either Plex HTPC or Plex for Windows. Customizing Subtitle appearance in Plex Player for Windows/Mac/Linux and Plex HTPC and PMP

Thou shan’t have any other text encodings than UTF-8.
Unicode is a thing. It’s been supported in players across all platforms for decades now. There is no good reason to keep your files in antiquated 8bit encodings.

I recently upgraded to an OLED tv and am watching three body problem and let me tell you, I sure would like to turn the brightness of the subtitles down a bit. They’re pretty jarring against dark scenes and since a lot of the dialog is Chinese, I don’t have much choice. Amazing the AppleTV player doesn’t have any subtitle options at all.

I would like to be able to change the subtitle settings (mainly colour). Sometimes the subs are very bright on my OLED TV, currently I cannot change it to a softer tone or smaller size etcetera.

The current experience previews for mobile and big screen apps have those options… that’s no immediate solution for everyone in this thread but something to look forward to :telescope:

The only thing that bothers me about plex are the subtitle positions, I simply do not understand why I can’t place them wherever I want middle is too high but low is too low giving us a custom option would be perfect and would fix my only issue with the app.

That’s because Plex team doesn’t care. I asked about that many years ago.
