Subtitles shows as "Unknown"

Hi, I've a problem since I've instaled Plex months ago, and even through extensive search, I didn't find a solution.

The fact is: as a Brazilian, subtitles in PT-BR ALWAYS appear as "Unknown". Doesn't matter if they are SRT files downloaded by the OpenSubtitles agent or SRT files saved alongside the video (with the proper 'Same_name_as_the_video.pb.srt" naming convention). In that case, they appear as Unknown (SRT)

I've checked my configurations, and the agent is downloading the right files and stores them in a "pb" named folder somewere in the bundle.

Don't know what to do.

If you guys can help, I would apreciate.

Thanks in advance and sorry for any english mistakes, as it's not my native language.

Brazilian is not on the official list of languages for subtitles. The plex devs probably left out of because of that. Not sure if there is a way to add that manually to the program. The closest you can get is pt for Portuguese.

In fact, both of Plex and OpenSubtitles works perfectly with Brazilian Portuguese. The OpenSubtitles Agent download correctly and saves in a folder with proper naming (pb). If the Agent KNOWS that is downloading a brazilian portuguese subtitle, and if it saves in a correctly named folder, I wonder why it forget when showing the media. When does it forget?

At least I think that the problem is on the server, because the subtitle is shown as unknown in the plex.tv app, in the Android App and in the iOS app.

Oh, I know the files exist and you can get them, but the pb abbreviation is not official so when pms sees the pb abbreviation it doesn’t know what to translate it to. The files will play fine, it’s just like not having the abbreviation in there.

It seems sloppy to download a subtitle and leave it as unknown, when you have means to identify it. I'm searching for the exact place, in the python code, where the Plex associate a code with a language. No luck until now.

I don't think that would work, cause even if you change it in the python code, you'd need to recompile it i guess.

If you mean the OpenSubtitles Agent python code the best you'll be able to get (with a LOT of tinkering) is for it to save PB subtitles as PT.

Personally I gave up on this and wrote myself an agent to fetch from legendas.tv, now there are only 3 languages displayed on my server: Portuguese (PB saved as PT) from my Legendas agent, Unknown that I actually know is PB from OpenSubtitles and English from OpenSubtitles (just in case)

That's nice. Can you post a link to your agent? That way I would set the OpenSubtitles to download English subs only, and the Legendas to download the PT-BR subs when they're avaliable.

Edit: I've found your github and downloaded the agent. Valeu pelo trabalho :)

Edit 2: No luck instaling the plugin. I extracted the folder to the "C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Plug-ins". Restarted the server, but the plugin doesn't show under the agents section in the server configurations. And I enabled the "disable compatibility check" too.

I searched in the GIT site and found this:

Jumping again  this “Unknown” issue is now fixed in the awesome Sub-Zero plugin.

If you’re a Brazilian like me and want to have your pt-BR subs showing up as “Português” go grab that plugin.

Thank you!

I found this simple method to show your languange when you select your SRT file on PLEX movies.

Locate language code at:

copy your SRT subtitles file to the PLEX directory where you have your movie.

rename it adding your country code as follows:

in my case my SRT files comes in spanish so my code is .spa, add it before .srt extension

Gone.Baby.Gone.2007.720p.BrRip.x264.BOKUTOX.YIFY.spa.srt

and that’s it!, next time your load it in plex it display Spanish SRT instead of Unkown SRT on your options.

@“MovieFan.Plex” When will this be taken care of? This is a paid product and this is a old issue with a simple fix

Yep, same problem here, please fix that.
