Since a couple of month the subtitles are not working anymore. The server downloads them and I can select them in the menu. However, they are not displayed on any of my end devices which are all Android based (Sony SmartTV, Android Phone, Android Tablet etc.). It doesn’t matter if the Plex server downloads the subtitle automatically or if I download them manually - the effect is the same - I can see them in the menu, select them but nothing is displayed.
To me it looks like that happened over night, I have not done any changes in the settings.
Plex is running as server in a docker on a Synology DS1621+. All other functions of Plex working fine - just the subtitles stopped working and so far I failed to get it back.
I have seen other posts with similar issue - however, no real solution give that works for me.
I was also having this problem for the last week or so, however it is now resolved, but I’m afraid I am not sure exactly why/how because I did all of the following things:
I reset my plex password (after receiving an email from plex advising this as there had been some sort of compromise)
My plex server then needed to be reclaimed
I then noticed that I was running quite an old plex server version, so I decided to upgrade (i run plex server in a docker on one of my remote servers), so I recreated the docker pulling from linuxserver/plex like I have done for years.
Then my library was empty and there were errors scanning my library, and I checked that that docker was STILL very old so I recreated the docker pulling from lscr.io/linuxserver/plex:latest which currently is version 1.28.2.6106. My library was then all back and web player working fine.
On the android TV (xiaomi 4k streaming stick), i became logged out due to the password change, and was unable to log back in (some error that i did not take proper note of, sorry) . So I cleared the data of the android app.
And now external subtitles are working again on the android-tv on same video where they hadn’t been working for last few weeks! Hooray!
So I’m afraid I’m not sure what worked - perhaps just clearing the android app data, or the server upgrade, or the new login session, who knows!
