Sudden difficulties playing media files (server not powerful enough, direct play is disabled errors)

Synology version: Model DS1512+ w/ DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 6
Player Version#: experienced on roku & web client (chrome)

I seem to suddenly be experiencing the dreaded “server not powerful enough to convert” / “server cannot direct play this item, direct play is disabled” 1-2 punch for many of my media files. I’ve been poking around in the settings and can’t for the live of me figure out what’s preventing it from working. Now, it’s an older Synology and w/no hardware acceleration and not a super heavy amount of processing power, but it’s always direct played everything fine until recently.

What’s interesting is that it will still play 4K content just fine on my Roku, but fail to play older / smaller content. I’ve disabled all the transcoding settings I can find, and have it set to force to direct play, no captions enabled, and still nothing. I’m sure I’m missing something, but it’s happening to many different shows/content suddenly that used to work fine. I feel like something must be broken in a codec library, or perhaps I could do a full reinstall, but I really dislike the idea of potentially losing my database and having to rebuild. (I should be able to back it up & restore it, but I’d like to avoid this step unless deemed absolutely necessary.)
