Super Sonic

Server Version#: 1.24.0.4930
Player Version#:
PlexAmp: iOS 3.5.0

Some interesting new additions to the music features going by the blog, but I’ve noticed that for some reason I am not seeing all of those features, just some and I’m not really sure why. I’m not seeing albums broken up into types for instance. I can’t seem to see mixes for you, track radio or on this day.

Features aren’t region specific are they?

Definitely not region specific, no.

The album types are brought in from the relevant release groups on MusicBrainz. I’d suggest ensuring that your albums are correctly matched. Make sure you’re using the Plex Music agent and scanner. Refreshing metadata might also help, but without more info from you it’s difficult to troubleshoot further.

Re. the Super Sonic features (sonically similar, track radio, mixes for you etc), this is dependent on the sonic analysis being completed on the server. Make sure the setting is enabled in both locations:

Settings > Library

and:

Once those are set, either wait for the analysis to complete during the butler window, or kick it off manually by scanning your music library. Note that the analysis can take quite some time based on server performance and library size, and the feature will only be available after it’s completed.

The sonic analysis is complete, sonically related tracks, albums and artists are working fine.

And yeah, it seems (I tested it on one artist) refreshing metadata makes Album Types start to work.

Good to know. Well, the rest of the features are dependent on a few things.

Mixes for you
This is based on your recent listening history. If you’ve not been using Plex Music much lately, it won’t be available yet. IIRC, it’s generated on the server once a day (or something like that) based on the last few days, weeks, and months of listening history. I’m not sure what window of time it looks at specifically sorry.

On this day
Shows albums with significant anniversaries, where significant is a multiple of 5. e.g. 5 years ago, 10 years ago on this day etc. Some days you may not have any, others you may have a bunch of them.

Track radio
Should “just work”. Long press a track, or use the ... menu in Plexamp and click “Play Track Radio”.

After setting the necessary server options, the sonic analysis did not start when I tried scanning my music library…

By default, the sonic analysis isn’t triggered by a media scan (or by triggering the general media analysis). It’ll only start during the scheduled server maintenance or (if configured accordingly) for newly added media (-> prerequisite for the latter is to set Settings > [Server Name] > Library > Analyze audio tracks for sonic features to maintenance and when media is added).

Edit: Keep in mind the sonic features are only available on certain platforms for which the ML libraries are available (mostly x86 architectures).

Edit 2: rephrased my original post to be more clear/precise as a scan CAN actually trigger the sonic analysis IF the server is configured accordingly

I definitely do not have track radio if I long press on a track in Plexamp even though I enabled Sonic for my Music library and “Analyze audio tracks for sonic features” to scheduled task several days ago. There’s just Play, Play Next, Add to Queue, Add to Playlist, Go to Album, and Go to Artist.

The only new feature that I’ve seen is On this day but that doesn’t require any sort of sonic features since it’s just regular metadata. I’m not seeing any evidence that the new sonic features exist.

Really excited about this feature… finally got the scan to kick off thanks to the post above by SimonXCIV. 18 hours in - completed 4.1% - Sonic Analysis (2970 remaining of 3199 Albums to analyze).

Buckle in, this is going to take a while.

This leaves the question if the sonic analysis is actually complete. The features will only come alive once the analysis is done for the entire library.

Can anyone answer, what data or metadata is Plex using to determine and use Sonic? Is it musicbrainz? Gracenote again?

I just answered your question in another thread. It doesn’t use any metadata at all:

Wanted to throw in an update here so others can get some timeframes on scan times… 9 days running (no interruptions or restarts) and we just hit - completed 70.5% - Sonic Analysis. So yeah, the process takes a little while. Good thing I buckled in!

Few more days and it’ll be good to go.

To complete your benchmark… would you mind sharing what CPU your PMS is running on and how many albums the analysis is dealing with?

Sure thing @tom80H.

Plex is running on an old HP DL160:
Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU L5520 @ 2.27GHz

The machine is a VM running on ESXi 6.5 which has CPU 2 cores allocated. Storage is SSD. Allocated memory is 8GB. OS is CentOS Stream 8. There are 5 other VMs running on the hypervisor, nothing under heavy load.

Album count is 3199 (31553 tracks for analysis).

I have been using Plex as I normally would as well, 36h of music listened since the start of Sonic scanning, 8h of TV and 1.5h movies. Scanning has had no impact on regular use (great job on keeping things leveled out Plex crew). Let me know if any other info would help out.

Sonic analysis 1 week and 1555 albums later and…. Nothing lol. Plexamp shows no sonically similar anything. I’m sure it finished the scan earlier today and I’ve tried the iOS and desktop app with same results. Also restarted pms and refreshed metadata for music. :slightly_frowning_face:

I think it would be incredibly useful if there was an ability to see the status of your sonic analysis, even when the analysis task is not running. As far as I can see there is no way to do this. Anyone know of a way?

There’s a thread which I found very useful vis-a-vis sonic analysis. Other users shared their experiences there. Check it out.

Plex server: Version 1.24.1.4931
Plex Web: Version 4.59.2

I have checked Settings → Library but there is no “Analyze audio tracks for sonic features” option. I also checked my Music Library and there is no “Sonic Analysis” checkbox.
I am a Plex Pass subscriber and my Server is running on i686 Ubuntu.

At the time of writing this is the latest version available. I have restarted my server and the options are still not available.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Jo

Just an update to my previous post, added a new album and it scanned and now I see results in plexamp for all so no clue what happened either way.
