Sync to mobile hangs

Hi, I recently purchased a plex pass to enable me to sync all my music to my android mobile phone, easy so I thought. Sadly this does not work it hangs at various points on the sync no matter what I try to do, I managed to get it to sync just the A section of my artist list but this took over an hour where Itunes would take 5 minutes on an iPhone. I’m syncing at original quality as well so no conversion should be necessary and it doesn’t show in conversion either so that seems normal.
I paid for plex pass for this and the movie sync but it fails at the first hurdle,
Any help would be appreciated

Syncing at original quality does not guarantee that the file is transferred as is. The mobile sync feature is old and hasn’t been updated to support all file formats your device may support.

There are issues with the mobile sync feature and very large sync jobs. It’s best to limit the sync jobs to smaller batches. If you’re trying to sync your entire music library, YMMV on if it works or not. Keep in mind that the way sync jobs are performed, it’s an all or nothing proposition. If you try syncing large jobs and there is 1 failure along the line, it can affect that job finishing as well as future jobs.

Also keep in mind that the feature was not intended to be used as a way to copy your entire music library to a device. There has been work to improve on this but it’s still not great. A new sync update is planned for sometime in the future which should help, but I have no news on when that may be available.

If this is a key feature for you having a Plex Pass, you might want to ask for a refund.

Hi thanks for the response, does the same problem apply to movies/series? it would only be a select few at a time.
is it possible to transfer the music onto my mobile and then add into plex that way, I’m assuming not. I was hoping that plex would be the all round tool for me for music and video rather than having other apps (none of which seem to work great on android).
I wouldn’t ask for a refund I’ve been using plex for a while now on the free side so happy with a contribution anyway.

Hey @Stewart_Walker, I have had a few hiccups with sync’ing movies and tv to my android tablet, it seems if I don’t keep the screen on it will just pause the sync. However that might be more of an issue with my tablet then with plex.

On the music side of things I have actually had decent luck with the android plex app, but an even better experience with the new PlexAmp (play store). It has really good caching, a setting to prefer downloaded over streaming, etc… Here is the full page for it.

I’ve never tried to sync my whole library, but I do have a few smart playlists (like 5 star songs, 10 most recent albums, etc…) and those sync pretty quickly whenever I tag a new song as 5 star. I think in total I usually have around 1 - 2 GB sync’d to my phone.

Hi @fishtek appreciate the response. I guess I could try running sync and make sure the screen doesn’t time out which I can easily change.
I had a look at PlexAmp but again it won’t allow me to download all my music in one go and I don’t want to sit and choose what I want. It surprises me as to why this is so difficult for plex to do. I was hoping for a 1 stop solution for movies and music but it seems I’m not going to get that right now. There doesnt seem to be an app for android that does this either …that i can find
Shame as I love plex for its streaming capabilities!

So I think you can accomplish what you want with a smart playlist.

I’m not sure how many gig of music you have, in my case a tablet or android phone simply doesn’t have enough storage for my whole music library. But if your number of songs is reasonable perhaps this would work.

In plexamp hitup the settings->downloads->quality and decide if you want to download them in their regular quality aka maximum (which will take up more space on your device, but not require the server to convert them prior to transferring them) or if you want to have the server convert them to something smaller like 128 Kbps.

Then head over to your computer and fire up the plex web interface, music->library, click the “All” in the top right and choose “custom filter”. Then to make sure it gets all your music you could use a filter like: “Date Artist added” -> “is after” -> “1900-01-01” or something like that. Then choose “Save As…” -> “Smart Playlist” and give it a name like “The Kitchen Sink”.

Finally back on your android device in plexamp, find the playlist in the browse or search for it, click the triple dot next to it and ask it to “download”.

Hope that is helpful, I’m curious how this works for you, so keep us posted!

Thanks again for the help, sadly it doesn’t work, I tried setting a playlist with all albums, it randomly just downloaded 300 and something tracks from that playlist, then I tried making a playlist of all tracks (5 thousand plus) and it randomly chose 300 and something tracks to download. There must be a limiter somewhere but I cant find one. There is a bar that you can slide over when you hit the button which I thought may solve it but no still just the 300 odd tracks.
Frustrated by it but looks like I will have to try find another solution
