Any news on when download/synch will be available again on chromebook(acer spin 713)?

Lifetime Plex Pass member here…

This is absolutely and utterly ridiculous.

No excuses. It’s been a year!!!

Waiting for a fix myself.

still waiting. time from feature regression to a resolution is setting new records…

@anon18523487 So whats the news? Any hardware we can buy, additional data we can submit, anything we can do to get some sort of anything on this?

No, we don’t need more info.

Well then? What’s the hold up? You guys should be embarrassed at this point.

It’s an architectural issue. There is a significant amount of work needed to get it fixed. I don’t have any details to share but it is being worked on. Hopefully soon.

Honestly though as a software developer I get it some problems can be tough. But here’s the thing, I pay for this service monthly despite rarely utilizing it during covid. I finally needed it for a long flight tomorrow but the option just isn’t there for my chromebook (pixelbook go i5). It’s time to unsubscribe until this is fixed as it’s the most valuable feature for people who have to travel.

I wish I could cancel, but I have a lifetime pass and the only reason I bought the lifetime pass was to sync content for viewing while travelling. They are playing with fire by offending paying customers. They used to be one of the only good offerings, now there are lots of competitors.

How do we elevate this as a priority for the dev team? Can you provide some contact information beyond the forums?

We can’t, it’s not opensource software, there’s no public bug tracker. So I guess we can already feel lucky we at least had an acknowledgement of the problem from a plex team member and few updates when requested… That’s the problem with closed source mindset, if there was at least a public bug tracker we would probably have wayyyy more people writing and we could at least see the priority they have put on this.

So we just have to wait and hope for the best…

I also bought a lifetime pass… I guess that’s the unfortunate part on leverage… we’re “already paid” customers, not “paying customers”.
I’d really like to see Plex succeed and do well though- I always liked the product. However, the service and communications end could use some very simple changes that would make a HUGE difference to customers. At this stage, it’s my recommendations that may change.

I understand that Chromebook users are probably not as populous as Android/iOS users when it comes to the mobile apps, but it is really starting to feel like these issues with Chromebooks and syncing aren’t cared about. @anon18523487 any idea if the below issue is related to this x86_64 issue? If not could it be related to the new Downloads feature?

Just spent 19 hours in a car on a trip to visit family and wasn’t able to use Plex as much as I would have liked to. Between 1 super old tablet and 3 Chromebooks the tablet was the only thing that could download content. Not looking forward to the return trip with limited media options.

Plex does want to get this working again on the x86_64 devices. As mentioned, there is a technical issue right now getting the app working properly on these devices, it’s not just a bug that can be fixed with changing some code.

To be clear, the issue started with a specific version of the app, I’d need to check exactly the version but it was somewhere around 8.13. If you install an earlier version of the app, that should get Sync working again. Android (mobile) beta release notes - #399 by romancamelia

For that linked thread, I’m not familair with that issue but it’s possibly related.

This is an important bit of information we got here… Will try to downgrade.

It’s not just the sync that is broken. Even trying the new downloads feature is hampered by this bug. I would hope that in and of itself would help to prioritize the bug a resolution.

Full disclosure that I work for a company invested in chromebook sales, but… Chromebooks outsold Mac last year (IDC: Chromebooks Outsold Macs for the First Time in 2020 - MacRumors). So, it’s not like they’re a hobby project or gimmick anymore. It’s a legitimate platform that should be taken into consideration.

I’m just throwing my 2 cents in here, but for me… I’ve moved in the Emby and haven’t had as good an experience from Plex in many years. (sorry Plex, I still love you guys… But we seem to be drifting apart)

Correct. Sync and Downloads are both affected.

I’ve accidentally found a potential workaround solution - at least for my Pixelbook running CromeOS 92.0.4515.157 (Official Build) (64-bit)

When I download Plex from the Play Store, I don’t have the Download option (or the new Sync option). I haven’t had it for months.

However - if I download the latest available APK for armeabi-v7a from APKMirror Plex: Stream Free Movies & Watch Live TV Shows Now 8.21.2.27212 APK Download by Plex, Inc. - APKMirror it WORKS! and I can download/sync. Everything seems to work fine, but I haven’t really tried everything. But it can play and download (and play the download offline)

I think the Pixelbook is downloading the x86_64 version from the Play Store (which via the APK doesn’t work either) as I think it should. I don’t enough about the Android layer in this Pixelbook to know why the armeabi-v7a version works, but it does… at least for me.

I don’t have my Pixelbook in developer mode, so I had to go through these steps to be able to sideload the APK. It’s easy and took about 5 mins total How to Easily Sideload Android Apps on Chromebook [Guide] | Beebom

Your results may vary, but worth a shot. Total accident, I just downloaded the wrong file the first time…
