Syncing with PLEX?

So, I’ve managed to build a large media server of several TBs of my favorite movies and TV Shows. I’ve had Plex Pass for almost a year and I love it. I’m looking into a new use case for my PLEX server, I’ve always seen the “Sync” option for items but never used it. Ideally I’d like to get a garbage tablet with an SD Card slot and “Sync” some favorites to it so I can always have something on hand in case my server is down or I’m without internet or unlimited data.

My question is, how does the Sync function work? The name sync just seems kind of silly in itself, as Synchronization implies the source material hosted on the server is changing or evolving in some fashion. Am I supposed to be syncing whole playlists worth of content I can administratate from the desktop web interface? Can I “push” a sync command to a device?

Thanks
Paul

If your “garbage” tablet still has access to an App store so it can download the current Plex app for Android, just give it a go. Your Plex Pass will activate it to full functionality.

You’ll need a server with the ability to transcode, though.

Oh I’ve got it setup already and I’m “Syncing” some shows episode by episode, but it feels like in missing the point of the function. I just feel like it’s either poorly named or I’m not using it correctly.

You can sync a whole series. If you set a limit of e.g. 5 episodes, it will erase watched episodes and sync more unwatched ones as you progress through the show.

The whole “point” of it is that you may wanna take the tablet with you, to a place where no internet connectivity is available, so you can’t stream directly from your server.
