Synology 7.2.2 release and PMS performance

I’m still on DSM 7.2.1 (fortunately for now). For those on 7.2.2, I’m wondering how PMS is performing. I have a large number of HEVC files (only at 1080p) that have been running just fine with hardware transcoding enabled. I believe 7.2.2 loses the hardware transcoding, so I’m wondering if performance takes a big hit (stuttering, buffering, etc.).

No difference here. Been on it since release. It transcodes just like usual.

I belive plex is not dependent on Synology codecs, and use FFMPEG to transcode

DSM 7.0 → 7.2.1 use the same internal format for the SPK (package) file.

As of DSM 7.2.2, Synology changed that format. This is why we needed to create a new SPK entry for the Downloads page.

For all DSM 7+ packages, the binaries inside are identical.

PMS is not dependent on anything internal to DSM except for the DSM filesystem and networking as it’s always been. PMS downloads all drivers and codecs as they are needed from Plex.tv

The Synology Codecs and other media packages (Video Station) belong, and solely created for Synology’s usage.

To upgrade from DSM 7.2.1 → 7.2.2

  1. Uninstall the PMS package (first radio button - Uninstall Only. KEEP files)
  2. Upgrade DSM
  3. Restart DSM
  4. Download the DSM 7.2.2 package from Plex
  5. Manual Install the 7.2.2 package in Package Center

PMS will see the existing installation and continue where it left off without any change (unless you change version – then it will perform internal updates as appropriate)

Thanks! Very helpful wiht the protocol, and all set. So far so good!

What is the best process to migrate PMS from a Synology NAS on DSM 7.1.1 to another, second, NAS on DSM 7.2.2 (New drives are in the new NAS). I have not started anything.

Source NAS : PMS 1.41.2.9200-70009200 running on Synology DS415+ on DSM 7.1.1-42962 (Update 7).

Destination NAS: DS423+ running 7.2.2-72806 (Update 2).

I see various bits on migrating Plex on DSM 6 to a DSM 7. Other info on 7.1 to 7.2 on same device. Any directions or suggestions would be most appreciated. I will be using Synology migration assistant.

Make a full HyperBackup backup of the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

Copy that backup to the new machine.

Install Plex on the new machine but do not start it. (7.2.2+ version)

Restore the HyperBackup. It will overwrite the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

This will work contingent on:

  1. Media shared folders and all files exist just as they did on old NAS
  2. PlexMediaServer user has permission to all the media (you’ll have a lot of trash can symbols to fix if you forget)

Excellent thank you.

Interesting I figured migration assistant would copy over all the Plex package structure so good thing you mentioned hyperbackup… Should I use hyperbackup for the media also? (Same volume different shared folder.

So can hyperbackup do a proper backup while the Plex package /service is running or do I need to stop Plex before doing the hyperbackup of the source Plex?

Plex should be stopped when you make the backup – keeps database integrity

  1. Create identical shares on the new machine
  2. Create a direct NAS->NAS mount (FileStation - Tools - Remote Mount)
  3. Using the direct mount, copy whole share → whole share until done
( This will take the most time)
  4. When ready, Stop Plex
  5. Make the HyperBackup
  6. When it finishes, use that same network connection to copy the backup over
  7. On the new machine, Restore from that backup

So o should follow the second post? They seem similar but different.

@Ed.K

My first post concerns only PMS. (I did say contingent on the shares/ media )

The second post augments that first post by showing the movement of all your media using FileStation from one NAS to the other and interweaving where PMS comes into play in the process.

The important point to remember is that you’re CLONING one to the other.
For PMS to work as a clone of the original, it must be a mirror copy.

There are a bunch of different ways of doing that.
( Note: When I built my new NAS, I did a bulk copy of my ‘Media’ share first; which took 2+ days to complete )

Think about the big picture.

  1. Copy the media and make it look exactly like the original
  2. Copy PMS (using HyperBackup) from the original and restoring on the new
  3. Starting it up and letting the new take over.

Excellent. Thanks.
Does this also handle the OTA TV and DVR that is currently running on Plex? I totally forgot about that part.

Because it’s a clone, whatever it was doing at the time you stopped it & made the backup – Will continue on the new machine.

DVR recordings which got missed (due to tv air schedule) are missed. Can’t help that.

Processing of DVR will continue on the new machine as if nothing happened.

I think it went ok but there might be something fishy. It all seems to show ok. Yay you

Question- on my phone app I can’t tell which server I am connected to to confirm all is good so I can shut down the old one.

  1. duplicated media to new NAS
  2. Backed up original old Plexmediaserver share.
  3. Downloaded and installed newest Plex server for 7.2.2 in DSM package Centre (deselected box to start after install.)
  4. Restored Plexmediaserver share from hyperbackup to new NAS and started Plex service.
  5. Used link (with proper new IP) at bottom of Plex package window provided by package Centre to open up web page of new Plex server.
-It did prompt a warning that I am visiting a page not managed by plex (or something to that effect) and I selected to continue anyway.
-all looked ok for media and settings in the new IP Plex web. Yay!!
  6. I renamed the friendly name of new server by adding a 1 to the end.

The old original NAS with plex is still running with the original name. I cannot stop it without command line (bug introduced by 7.1 update7). I didn’t think stopping it was needed but is it needed maybe??

Confusing-When I open my phone app I don’t see where to switch from one server to the other. Also starting to watch a show on my phone, it does not show as partially watched on the new plex web so my phone is using my old one I think.

How can I switch to the new server? Did I mess something up?

Correction, when tap movies, for example, it says movies-servername1 at the top In the app. Cool.

Ok. Should I be able to chose the old one? Was it somehow disabled on plex’s end when i started the new one with the same name.

Thanks

@Ed.K

The server currently on your account (which SHOULD be the new clone)
is at IP: 10.0.32.82

Given one is a clone, this is process of elimination but IP wins

As for your phone, there should be only one.
If you created an entry by IP address – that’s how you’ll get two.
