Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
I’ve been struggling to get movie files to play well, from what I have found my nas should support HW acceleration. Is there a reason it is not an option for me?
Thanks

A Plex Pass is required.
Thanks, not sure how I missed that
You can try the monthly option, ~$4.99 USD, and cancel if it does not meet your needs.
Without a Plex Pass, a DS920+ will struggle to transcode 1080p media (see Plex NAS Compatibility Guide)
You can monitor playback via the Plex Dashboard to see if the video or audio streams are transcoding.
Some Options:
Convert media in advance:
You can use Handbrake or similar tools to transcode the media into a format that will direct play. The most compatible format is H.264 video, High@4.1 or lower, with AAC 2.0 audio, and SRT subtitles. Most clients support AC3/Dolby Digital audio as well.
Avoid Subtitles:
Some Plex clients have limited subtitle support. For example, with the Plex LG SmartTV app, if the audio is transcoding, enabling subtitles forces a video transcode.
Avoid Plex Web:
Plex Web has limited playback capabilities due to constraints placed on it by the web browsers. If watching on a PC or Mac, try Plex for Win/Mac instead. It direct plays most formats.
Also, if you’re new to running Plex on a Synology NAS, peruse these two support documents. They can help you avoid some common issues:
