Best steps -
-
Uninstall the DSM 6 Plex app before you make the transition (move the HDDs to the new NAS)
-
Download the Synology Assistant app for your computer.
-
Control Panel - Upgrade & Restore - Backup your current configuration (just in case)
-
Normal Shutdown of DSM. Leave the old powered off.
-
Move the drives into the new machine
-
Start it up. - It will complain and flash Orange or Red
-
Open the Synology Assistant app and have it find the new NAS
-
It will have a button (Connect – or similiar named) and also show your new NAS is "migrate-able. Cick that butt and it will connect you to the NAS-resident DSM assistant.
-
As you open it, it’ll tell you that you need to (re)install DSM. This is expected because they use different OS packages for each NAS model.
-
You want to “migrate” (upgrade & install in one step) DSM. Let it do the driving for you. Just make certain you are upgrading and not erasing the whole volume
-
What it will do –
– It will read the existing DSM 6 configuration info
– In the DSM partitions of the hard drive, It will install DSM 7
– It will configure DSM 7 using the existing DSM 6 configuration as a base. -
When complete, it will restart
-
After restart, you’ll have some basic DSM 7 familiarization and customization to do (per your liking) before it gives you the new desktop
-
Once there, Reinstall your SYNOLOGY apps. Plex can wait until the core NAS is complete.
-
You’ll find that the Synology apps still have their configurations.
-
You’ll also find that your shared folders and network configuration is as you had it.
– If not, you can restore individual pieces from the saved DSM 6 configuration you downloaded before upgrading -
Now, you need to carefully follow my instructions for Plex.
– Read the top portion so you are familiar with everything that changed (FYI stuff)
– Scroll down and look at BOTH migration sequences. I have two because some find one way easier than the other. Choose whichever feels the best.
-
Download Plex from https://plex.tv/downloads DO NOT USE Package Center
-
The installer will tell you what it needs. My installer will guide you on the steps you need to perform.
-
Whatever you do, Once it starts “Installing” – Don’t interrupt it / restart the NAS.
-
Some installations can take hours to convert from DSM 6 → DSM 7 (depends on how much media you have)
-
If Synology claims “Operation Failed” … Ignore it. Open Resource Monitor and look for processes by “PlexMediaServer”
-
ALSO, In the “Plex” shared folder, you’ll find
Migration.log. This is the installer telling you where it’s at in the process, -
When you see “Clean /volumeX/Plex” – You know it’s done
