This will remove anything DSM 7 has – Keeping your “Plex” shared folder metadata safe
Install the DSM 7 package again.
Expect it to “engage” migration and start giving you instructions about permissons.
If it does not, and installs silently, CONFIRM you still have metadata in the “Plex” shared folder then Uninstall + ERASE again.
If, after the next iteration it does not engage,
– Control Panel - Shared folders
– Rename “Plex” to “Plex-temp”
– SAVE
– EXIT Control Panel
– Control Panel - Shared folders again
– Rename “Plex-temp” to “Plex”
Hi
apologies in advance … I know you must be pulling your hair out. I apparently have done a lot of things wrong. My Synology NAS is a DS416Play. I upgraded to DSM 7, I DID NOT read anything beforehand about Plex issues so did not uninstall Plex prior to DSM 7. I chose ‘repair’ after the update. I saw there was an issue so downloaded 1.25.0.5282 - 7000… and installed that. I have checked the 3 permissions for PlexMediaServer under System internal User in Shared Folders. In File Station there is a Plex Folder and a PlexMediaServer folder, the Plex Folder is empty (no migration log files, metadata). The PlexMediaServer folder is populated. When I click on Plex Media Server it says it is running however I cannot access it at all (via app.plex.tv it says the server is unreachable and via the local network I get an unable to connect message).
I am now completely out of ideas and would appreciate any help you can give. I apologise in advance for having to ask but after working this for 8 hours I cannot think what else to do.
I did the uninstall steps as outlined and reinstalled and received the Installation successful notification. I am now lost as to what else to do. Unfortunately we also had a storm and had a power trip.
Browse into PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server.
You should find all the usual folders and a “Preferences.xml”
If you do.
Uninstall the package
Sign out of Plex/web (upper right corner)
Install the package again -
– Use the “Plex Claim Token” option
– Click “Get Plex Claim Token”
– Browser will open displaying claim-xxxxxx
– Click COPY
– Return to the installer and PASTE the claim token in the small window on the form.
– Click NEXT to continue installing.
– After an additional 15-20 seconds, the installer will confirm success or failure reconnecting your server to your account.
@ChuckPa, thankyou, I did the above (preferences.xml was in the folder). The installer had a pop-up saying server was claimed by “”. Started Plex and it says it is running however I still cannot access either via the ip address method or app.plex.tv. IP address method says ‘refused to connect’ and the app says the server is unreachable.
UPDATE Upgrading the RAM worked. Everything is now fine. So sorry to have wasted your time.
thankyou. Please find attached the zipped file Logs.zip (216.6 KB)
As a side note … I’m going to upgrade the RAM on the NAS because she’s chugging like an old steam train no coal left.
I too am having problems with getting plex.tv to recognize my synology server. I have followed the steps above that ChuckPa told DebsDesi to do. But when I go to http://ip.addr.of.nas:32400/web (yes, I replaced my ip address) I’m still getting “Not Authorized You do not have access to this server” But if I go to http://ip.addr.of.nas:32400 it opens up the page, but my files are not showing up. Here are my log files if it helps. Logs.zip (177.8 KB)
I currently have a Synology DS412+ running DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 2. It has Plex Media Server v1.24.3.5033-6000 installed and working perfectly. I’ve used it without any problems for several years. However, the DS412+ cannot be upgraded to DSM 7 and it’s getting old, so I’ve decided to upgrade.
I’m currently setting up a new DS920+, running DSM 7.0.1-42218. I’ve downloaded PlexMediaServer-1.25.1.5286-34f965be8-x86_64_DSM7.spk, but haven’t yet installed it onto the DS920+.
I’ve read through this thread and several other articles. However, because I’m 1)upgrading DSM versions and 2)moving to different hardware, could you give me some steps to take in the proper sequence, so that I don’t botch everything up and show up in this forum with a mess? I’m thinking it’s best to ask for help before I take the plunge…
Uninstall the DSM 6 Plex app before you make the transition (move the HDDs to the new NAS)
Download the Synology Assistant app for your computer.
Control Panel - Upgrade & Restore - Backup your current configuration (just in case)
Normal Shutdown of DSM. Leave the old powered off.
Move the drives into the new machine
Start it up. - It will complain and flash Orange or Red
Open the Synology Assistant app and have it find the new NAS
It will have a button (Connect – or similiar named) and also show your new NAS is "migrate-able. Cick that butt and it will connect you to the NAS-resident DSM assistant.
As you open it, it’ll tell you that you need to (re)install DSM. This is expected because they use different OS packages for each NAS model.
You want to “migrate” (upgrade & install in one step) DSM. Let it do the driving for you. Just make certain you are upgrading and not erasing the whole volume
What it will do –
– It will read the existing DSM 6 configuration info
– In the DSM partitions of the hard drive, It will install DSM 7
– It will configure DSM 7 using the existing DSM 6 configuration as a base.
When complete, it will restart
After restart, you’ll have some basic DSM 7 familiarization and customization to do (per your liking) before it gives you the new desktop
Once there, Reinstall your SYNOLOGY apps. Plex can wait until the core NAS is complete.
You’ll find that the Synology apps still have their configurations.
You’ll also find that your shared folders and network configuration is as you had it.
– If not, you can restore individual pieces from the saved DSM 6 configuration you downloaded before upgrading
Now, you need to carefully follow my instructions for Plex.
– Read the top portion so you are familiar with everything that changed (FYI stuff)
– Scroll down and look at BOTH migration sequences. I have two because some find one way easier than the other. Choose whichever feels the best.
I’m very sorry… I thought I had provided you with all my pertinent info, but I forgot a key point.
I’m not transferring my HDDs to the new machine. I’ve already installed new, larger HDDs in the new DS920+ and I’m starting from scratch with my Time Machine backups, and other shared folders. I’d just like to transfer my Plex info from the old DS412+ to the new DS920+ if possible.
I really appreciate your quick reply, and I sincerely apologize for not including this information in my first post.
On the new NAS, Create a shared folder named Plex (exactly that casing)
Let FileStation copy from the OLD “Plex” → NEW “Plex”
When all data is copied,
start with Step 18 above where you install Plex.
You will still be performing a migration ( because the metadata needs to be edited )
When it’s complete -
– “Plex” share will be empty except for “Migration.log”
– You will see a new shared folder “PlexMediaServer” where I keep the app data.
You can keep the “Plex” share for your media if you want -or- delete it.
Whatever you do. PLEASE stay out of “PlexMediaServer”. That’s for PMS only (internals),
When you need backups of it, HyperBackup makes a wonderful backup ( tested and approved )
EDIT: The procedure for (re)claiming a NAS (setup) on DSM 6 is different than DSM 7
@ChuckPa, firstly thank you for the incredible lengths you’ve gone to, and continue to go to for everyone here.
I wanted to let you know about an “anomaly” I experienced while following your steps, in case you need to check or adjust something.
I’m following through your migration instructions and I had an issue at step 5, installation, but not what you expect.
It installed correctly instantly. Didn’t appear to have an issues at all and it came up with the “successful” message straight away. I was waiting to set permissions on the new Plex Media Server Shared folder but nothing happened.
I tried to open Plex, but as expected nothing there, and I think it tried to install a new PMS.
I waited in case it was migrating, but the NAS drives weren’t doing anything, and there was no migration.log file.
So I set the permissions for the Ples Media Server user anyway. Still nothing.
Gave up waiting and followed through your steps to uninstall and erase. I double checked the permissions, and left them alone as they were correct.
I Reinstalled PMS, and this time it went through fine, did the migration and had the log file all as expected. Didn’t have the issue with permissions as they were already set.
I’m now installed and migrated successfully. Checked Plex and all my lbraries appear to be ok, with all my half viewed items still as they were.
Thankfully I only have a small library so it didn’t take long at all.
Just thought you might like to know.
Oh btw, my versions are:
DSM 7.0.1-42218
PlexMediaServer-1.25.2.5319-c43dc0277-x86_64_DSM7.spk
Just one question: Can I now delete the old “Plex” Shared folder?
I have 1.24.1.4931 version in my 920+ NAS DSM7, but i can´t install a new update. Always have problems with Media Library. I Modify de permissions but not working.Any recomendations?
