In my case, I followed your instructions, received no error, just a successful install, so stating something like:
"If you do not see a message about migration, just a message stating that installation was successful, then:
Set permissions on the folders per instructions in Step 3
Verify content is still in the Plex folder
Uninstall Plex and set the erase option
Install again"
That would probably more than suffice. It would have saved me (I’m assuming I won’t be the only one facing this) some time looking into this. And possibly save Plex employees some time answering support messages from other customers.
Sorry, I didn’t mean having that in the installer itself. I just thought it might be helpful to state something along those lines in Step 2 of your instructions that start here:
No offense taken if you judge differently. You know best; you’re doing most if not all the support here, even on a holiday weekend! Just in my read of the thread to solve my issue, I found those steps from your posts and thought my use case might be somewhat common.
I had remote access to server and could play media from it for about a day and then it suddenly stopped. I restarted and retried the next day and it worked again for another hour or so and then just stopped. The server shows running on my Synology server but it is “unavailable”
Currently I cannot get to the server from the web application. It states, The server “is not available”
Are there some log files i can get access to to try and figure this out?
OK - I have dele deleted the Plex server from my MacBook Pro and completely deleted all servers from synology NAS, I am ready to start from scratch. the only thing left (thank god) are the 1700 movie files on the the synology NAS volume 1., 4 bays - RAID 5 set up WD HD in 3 of the bays, 4b-4tb and 8tb,
I do want to also say THANK YOU to all of you helping me out, I am learning so much and you guys are so patient, I know I can get this to work before my theater is done,
Luinnar, I don’t how to thank you. I followed your steps and she’s back up and running. I fought the install for hours after the upgrade to 7.0. Thanks to you disaster averted. Again, thank you.
John
Hi ChuckPa
You helped me very well earlier this week with my own upgrade.
Today another big strange problem.
My brother was first a home user on my plex.
Today I bought and installed a new DS220+.
I made him also Lifetime Plex Pass member.
I installed (your) latest Plex app
Fromout DSM7 i get the message : Not Allowed, You have no access to this server?
I made all the permissions
I unshared my stuff
I reinstalled the NAS
I reinstalled the PLex App
I even deleted plex in the registry of my Win10
I read this whole article before writing you.
What can I do?
On my DS920+ my Plex works just fine.
On the pure, new DS nothing happens…
I just upgraded to DSM 7 and tried to update Plex, but I’m having problems. I think it stems from the fact I do not see the PlexMediaServer user in the system.
How can I fix this, or, at least completely uninstall plex safely so I can start again from scratch?
I had the same issue as Lanku24 with my upgrade (after following the 5 “pre-installation” steps from your migration guide). I think it would be helpful to add a note to the guide (not the popup window in the installer) for cases where the installer fails to correctly enter the migration mode and proceeds with a vanilla installation instead (which is what I think happened in my case).
Once I had erase-uninstalled the vanilla Plex installation and set the rights on the Plex folder as outlined in the migration guide, the migration proceeded as described in the guide.
Interesting, Looking over your link again, I found that I never got the GUI interface when installing plex on my NAS:
The plex installer now provides a Synology-style GUI for providing installation options. This same menu system affords options during upgrades and when uninstalling.
It feels like it would be more beneficial to completely remove plex and reinstall it from the download. I saw the instructions (just uninstall using package manager), but didn’t see if there was anything else I would have to manually remove before attempting to reinstall, or if just uninstall, then restart the NAS…
If you never got the installer / migration sequence to start then one of the following exists
DSM 6 app was still installed when DSM upgraded to DSM 7 — AND – “Repair” button clicked.
Synology Package Center version installed without migrating (The “repair” button causes this to happen.
What’s gong on here is simple –
The installer walks through a very simple sequence
Is there an existing Plex server in “PlexMediaServer/AppData” – If so, Install software and exit. (UPGRADE)
Is there a Plex server in that hidden location created by the BETA package 1.21.0.3744 – If so, Move it to PlexMediaServer/AppData then exit
If neither of the above, Look for a viable “Plex” share **with a Plex installation in it.
Caveat here –
The “Plex” shared folder permissions must (reasonably) be as the DSM 6 installer created them. DSM 7 doesn’t have the ability / privilege to read where you might have changed the “Plex” shared folder permissions.
Lastly, Not finding any existing servers, it creates a new server.
