I’ve recently “dusted off” plex, wanted to watch some old shows
However for many folders it just says " Empty Folder
There are no items in this folder"
which is not true. Files are there.
I clicked on Spanner > Manage Libraries > Scan library files
Scanned video library files, it completes in couple seconds, did refresh all metadata, nothing, tried analyse - does not do nothing at all - not even notification on dashboard
Had this server set up for years, nothing has changed
How can I either force full rescan or how do I resolve it?
Delete whole library and re-create it sounds like bit of an extreme measure and guess would loose some metadata as well? i.e. when I watched the movie etc.
2nd question - options to play .mp5 files
most of my files are .mp4 since that what TV supports through DLNA. I’ve noticed some movies are now mp5 (unrelated to question above missing folders). Where and how do I set up exception for those to be transcoded on NAS so TV can play it?
would this work? and is essentially DS720+ “man enough” to do this?
or what are my options when comes to playing mp5 movies? or can PS5 play those through plex.tv app?
Hi, thank you for the prompt response.
However, I did check permissions, correct ones PlexMediaServer R&W are applied, in the end deleted whole library and created again and still some folders are fine and some show no files. Permissions are inherited but still checked are identical. What is going on?
What about 2nd question - options to play .mp5 files?
When you set permissions, did you click the “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files” box? It’s critical to do so. Synology uses ACLs which must be propagated down the filesystem tree.
The Chinese format? (MP5?)
From what I understand, it’s “essentially” a MP4 but don’t understand the difference or need for a customization. I don’t know of anyone discussing MP5 here but will ask.
Permissions are OK, checked couple shows, and even within folder structure found below
Show A > Season 1 - no files found
Show A > Season 2 - files found etc.
Show B > Season 1 - no files found
Show B > Season 2 - no files found
I suspect there might be slight variations in format/encoding/whatever …
and for some reason Plex is not “picking them up”
When I play same shows through Synology DLNA direct, it works or most of them work.
Is there a ls command on Synology which can list files and basic info about encoding/codec? i.e. x264 AAC, avi mp3, etc
is there a list of supported formats/combination of? and/or are there plugins that can do that? if so, how do I install them?
What is the way to set that for example x264 aac, x264 mp3 play direct but x265 is encoded on Synology?
Just tested it on Music library, created new folder, it’s been over an hour and it didn’t automatically “pick it up”, only after Scan Library files
Presumably there’s a setting to auto refresh?
In the past just copied files over and shortly after they were showing up - kind of expected behaviour
As for MP5, my bad, meant x265, my TV can play x264 natively through DLNA but can’t play x265. Same Question but play x265 encoded files or mkvs with x265 encoded video inside
Hi, thank you for pointer, I’ve now changed
Manage > Libraries > Edit Video Library > Advanced > changed scanner
from Plex movie to Plex video files scanner
and can see all video content now
used to play content through ps4 which was better than TV in supported formats. can use PS5 but rather not
TV supports mpeg4
it does not support mkv, x265 nor avc
TV accesses synology via DLNA
so how can I set exceptions for DLNA to transcode movies on Synology so TV thinks is mp4? i.e. so can then play mkv, x265 and avc direct without using Plex client on PS5
How and where do I set up auto refresh so when new files/folders are added they will be added to Plex?
In terms of my question to have by folder as 1st option, where do I configure that for DLNA? and where do you configure default file sorting options?
Thank you
To access PMS you have 2 options (at least this is my understanding of it),
either via Plex Client - such as PS5 or through DLNA on devices which don’t have a client.
My TV does not hence there is no option but to utilise DLNA. The problem is that if video is other format than MP4, forget playing it.
So my question is whether there is an option to set up PMS to stream non mp4 content to DLNA client
Or is this a case of biting a bullet and use handbrake or similar tool to recode everything into mp4?
Is there such a tool for Synology? Might be slow but leave it overnight etc …
or is there a better tool than handbrake?
back to my other questions
for DLNA client, where is a config file which sets order of options so can have by folder as a first option rather than scrolling through?
How and where do I set up auto refresh so when new files/folders are added to Video share they will be added to Plex? i.e. Plex to “pick up” changes

I don’t install anything on my older 1080p TV. (it’s not capable).
Instead, I use the Amazon FireTV or the Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) and install PMS on that device.
This way, I get all the capabilities of newer at the far lesser price.
(FireTV 4K stick is $59 USD)
I gave up on DLNA long ago. Great idea but never really caught on for video.
I wouldn’t use Plex’s DLNA service. There are other DLNA servers now for NAS devices which work better. Plex’s has a memory leak which was never solved. It requires daily restarting.
