So, out of the blue all shared users and managed users lost the ability to play media from my server. When they login the menu system is blank. If you click on More it shows the name of my server, but says “No soup for you! You do not have access to this server”. I’ve deleted and recreated one of the managed users to see if that does it, but no dice. Has anyone seen this before? I’ve ad this server running for years without any major issues like this, so unsure how to proceed. Thank you.
Thanks. I did double check all of that before posting and the Plex user has proper permissions to each media share. When I choose my Plex user account I can see everything, play everything, and sync everything. There was one set of folders that had home movies that were showing “permission denied” in the logs, but none of the media folders indicated any access issues in the logs. I have since rectified that. When I choose a managed user for instance it indicates no access as in the above screen shots.
Yes, I as the owner am fine. I’ve been able to watch on any device at home and away from home. I’ve been able to sync new shows as they’re recorded as well. No home users or external users I have shared my libraries with can access. They get the same blank screens as those screen shots. I’ve deleted the guest user and re-enabled. Also deleted my “Kids” managed user and re-created with the same result, no access.
Alright, Let’s get @trumpy81 to help you. I’ve been pulled away from the Plex Home side of things and more back into the OS/platforms themselves. He has some FAQ/HowTo’s to help with this.
I’ve sent him a message to come look when he is online.
Thanks @trumpy81. I did go there and double check everything. They have libraries shared to them. See screenshot 1 below.
Yes, I did hit that and when it goes to the page that lists the categories you can enable/hide the list is blank.
When I switch to a managed home user and go to Users I see that the managed user has shared 3 libraries from me, but there’s a red exclamation point. See screenshot 2 below.
@trumpy81 Thank you!!! You got me on the right track… once I deauthorized the server, restarted, and claimed the server again as you suggested the users screen changed. It showed all the users I’ve shared my libraries with, but this time it indicated that no libraries were shared. I went through and shared the libraries I wanted with each user. Then boom, everyone was able to connect.
Trumpy has opted out of being a Ninja and returned to regular user status.
As a forum user, and volunteer Ninja, his comments were his own to control as he wished. He opted to remove them.
Since he and I worked very closely, I am attempting to recreate a new collection of the FAQ.
I updated my Plex Server on Synology NAS to the newest version 1.18 from 1.16 and since then, none of my managed users can see my libraries. I have gone back in and made sure they are not being restricted and the sharing looks right.
As an admin, I can see all my libraries.
Itried to go back to 1.16 but Synology won’t let me put the old version back on.
I suspect the issue with media access now lies in how discrete permissions were assigned in File Station.
If this has happened, manual steps are now needed to put them back to normal.
Be advised, you still may need to manually apply permissions from this point forward from time to time.
Here is the sequence as I apply them.
Are permissions completely missing inside the share itself? (need to fix this too)
Your goal is to give user Plex, a member of the Users group, permission to read everything in those media folders. (You’ve already given permission at the top of the share itself)
It is advised to resist adjusting permissions manually in the future from within each share. DSM’s “Shared Folders” permission settings do the work for us.
The files are owned by root.root
2 DSM grants permission to Plex to read
DSM grants permission to your username (admin?) to read/write.
The home screen shouldn’t be empty. When I go in as Rick (administrator rights), I see all my libraries (Documentaries, Movies, TV Shows, etc). It is only the managed users who can’t see the libraries.
I set the rights to apply to all sub-folders and files
