Synology package thread

I have similar issues as a guy a few posts before.

I’ve got a Syno 1511 (DSM 3.2) and tried several times to install PMS to it. I’ve never

got any error messages and all seems up and running, but I can’t get to the web interface to manage PMS. it just

opens a new window and I get an error message that it is unable to connect…I can’t connect to the server

with my aTV2 neither…

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

edit:

I just tried “/var/packages/Plex\ Media\ Server/scripts/start-stop-status start” via ssh…and I’ve got

Starting Plex …

su: can’t chdir to home directory ‘/var/services/homes/plex’

in return…

is this helpful?

I have a similar issue as the previous poster, actually two issues. My Plex is running on a Synology 2411+

  1. When I installed the Plex package it started fine and was scanning all movies and TV shows. However the Plex Synology Server would not display on any Plex client (Mac Mini Intel).
  • Shared folders containing movies were mounted on client
  • Plex Servers running on another Mac were showing fine

I did try to restart my disk station and now I am faced with a new problem:

  1. Plex doesn’t start at all.
  • It’s not showing in the active processes list under the Synology GUI for CPU usage
  • If I click the Plex logo I get the following error message: Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 169.254.146.202:32400. - Before I restarted the Diskstation, this took me to the Plex Media Manager.
  • Plex has permissions for all folders where Movies and TV are stored.
  • I have tried some of the tips to start Plex via the Terminal and get the same error as the previous poster:

    ---------------------------------------------

    Mac-Mini-Study-Room:~ mbahr$ ssh root@10.0.1.20

    root@10.0.1.20’s password:

    BusyBox v1.16.1 (2011-09-04 02:17:22 CST) built-in shell (ash)

Enter ‘help’ for a list of built-in commands.

    MLWServer> chown plex:users /volume1/Plex

    MLWServer> /var/packages/Plex\ Media\ Server/scripts/start-stop-status start

    Starting Plex …

su: can’t chdir to home directory ‘/var/services/homes/plex’

    MLWServer>

So no one right now has PMS working on DSM 3.2? I’d like to upgrade to DSM 3.2 but I’m holding off until this package is compatible as I use Plex everyday.

not sure, what gave you the impression, that Plex and DSM 3.2 aren't compatible, but I'm updated my system (DS411+) from 3.1 to 3.2 without any problem several weeks ago.

Ah, good news. The only reports in this thread weren't positive. Since I use Plex so much I didn't want to risk being without a working solution.

I can confirm that I don't have any problems with the latest PMS and DSM 3.2 on a DS1511+. Might even be working better.

Works like a charm on my DS1511+ and DSM 3.2, Very happy with it.

So I was having the same reinstall problem as some others had reported. I finally got it to work though. All I had to do (after uninstalling through package manager) was delete the Plex “user” and the “Plex” directory that was created on install (for some reason this housekeeping isn’t performed on uninstall). Install it after doing that and it should work again.

Ah very nice to hear that the changes made to the location of the temp dir seem to work. I'm always a bit hesitant in changing things that I don't know are easily undone.

By the way I experienced the exact same thing when logging in this week while streaming and DSM told me something like that the disk was full and you can't login.

@Nudgenudge
Is it useful that I still change this settings to fix my problem or will it be incorporated in a new build soon? Than I probably prefer to wait so I don't have to reset the changes before upgrading... or can I go with it anyway?

Does anyone know the default password for the “plex” user on Synology?

Just installed Plex on my RS810. Was able to get to :32400 once but not second time. Renistalled hoping to fix issue but no luck. Now I can’t seem to get service started at all. there is an ‘enabled’ file in the /var/packages/Plex Media Server directory but the Synology DSM Pacakge Center shows as stopped. Any ideas how I check to see if the service is started? How do I start the service? Btw, big noobie here.

*** UPDATE ***

After deleting ‘plex’ user and Plex directory, installed worked fine

Hi,

Got (almost) everything up and running perfectly on my new DS411+II. Love it!

BUT PMS won’t show up in my client (MacOS)! I’ve read through this thread and so far I’ve established the following:

  1. Avahi IS running (I did a “ps w”)
  2. in /user/syno/avahi/services there IS a file named pms.service. It’s content is almost identical to #81 - only difference is it says “NAS” instead of “NAS01”.

    What to do?

    Simon

Sorry guys, I had:

  • no Internet at home (still don’t, long, LONG story)
  • vacation time in Canada

but just before that, I tried a few things/fixes locally, and I have a be version here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27482871/PlexMediaServer.spk

    It includes:
  • compliance with the Synology standards (since they wanted a few things),
  • a improved creation/deletion of the Plex folder (hidden now in the File Manager, check below)
  • the transcoding fix,
  • the same binary. The Resource Manager bug should be fixed in the last DSM version, though.

    What remains:
  • UTF-8 file/folder names. Elan gave me a few pointers, I still need to check if this works,
  • the xxx:32400 URL bug.

    Multi-answer time again:

Yes, housekeeping isn't done in the current package, since "rm -rf" the Plex folder would fail miserably, and fail the uninstall.

In the new version, the folder is now created/deleted with Synology's tools, and it's much more efficient (as in "it works in a few seconds, not an hour" :D )
The only issue is: the "old" folder must be removed for it to work.
That includes working installations. Sorry guys, I couldn't find a way to keep it during the change. :(
Also, as stated above, it will be hidden in the File Manager (you can still SSH to it though, if needed).

So, here is the installation guide for the package above:
- uninstall current package,
- remove manually the Plex folder (can be long) and the plex user,
- install the new package.

I tried clean installs, uninstalls (which remove the plex folder), reboots, upgrades.

Again, sorry for the lack of backwards-compatibility, but it had to go for the new folder.

Just use "su plex" from the root account (the one for SSH), it should work.

Fixed in the package above.

Ok, so your NAS seems OK.
On your Mac client, do you see your NAS via Bonjour (i.e. appears in the Finder, in the left part of the window) ?
If not, try to reboot your Mac (or the NAS); Bonjour can be a pain sometimes for no particular reason.

Hey Nudgenudge, is there any way that we can keep our library intact? Like, backup it somewhere and then move it to the new folder?

If so, could you please provide instructions that should work?

I wouldn’t mind Plex to get the metadata again for my library as it usually doesn’t take long, it’s just that I would lose my watched history and costum coverart…

I'm not sure at all this works (mostly because I don't have any metadata left from all the test installs + no Internet), but what COULD work is:
- uninstall
- don't delete the Plex folder (but delete the plex user if it's still here)
- install the new package (it will create /volume1/plex, without caps)
- after install, shut down the Plex Media Server if it's running,
- SSH, and do "mv /volume1/Plex/Library /volume1/plex" (could be long, not sure)
- do a "chown -R plex:users /volume1/plex/Library" afterwards to reset the user rights.

Tell me if this works, it could help a lot of people here.

Will try that later tonight and let everybody know if it works…

One question though… If I use “cp /volume1/Plex/Library /volume1/plex” instead of moving, will it allow me in the future to go back to the previous version and have my library intact in case anything goes wrong?

Yes, it should.
Maybe it will need a chown on the old library after you re-installed the old package (since the plex user would be a new plex user).

@Nudgenudge

Ah very nice to see my 10 minutes streaming issue resolved!

BUT I did exactly as instructed and the new package starts in Package Manager but I can’t reach the server via webinterface… Basically nothing seems to be running but I can see the plex user created and also the Plex directory is created but no Library subfolder to be found so far…

What can I do?

Same problem here, couldn’t get to the webinterface. Had to rollback to the previous version.

By “not being able to get the webinterface”, do you mean that the link in the icon/Package Manager is not working, or that http://ip-of-your-nas:32400/manage does not work?

If it’s the second one, and no process exists on “ps w”, try to launch the process manually:

su plex -s /bin/sh -c "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/var/packages/Plex\ Media\ Server/target;export TMPDIR=/volume1/plex/tmp_transcoding;ulimit -s 3000;/var/packages/Plex\ Media\ Server/target/Plex\ Media\ Server &"

It should yell something that'll help me understand what is going on.

Also, don't forget that /volume1/Plex (with a upper-case) is the old Library folder.
The new one is /volume1/plex, and is not visible from the File Manager (it can be seen via SSH though).
