Take up too much CPU time

Server Version#:1.14.1.5488

My computer is i5-8500 and after upgrade to version 1.14.1.5488 I find out it is using too much CPU time all the time. There are no clients connecting and server is not in maintenance mode and no transcoding task.I don’t know what is server doing.I have to open the application when needed to save power.Does anyone know how to solve it ?

Thanks.

Plex could be updating your libraries or generating thumbnails.

  1. Check Settings -> Library and adjust timing or disable tasks:
       Scan my library periodically
       Generate video preview thumbnails
       Generate chapter thumbnails
       Analyze audio tracks for loudness
  1. Look at Settings -> Scheduled Tasks and adjust start/stop times, etc.

  2. You can disable video preview thumbnails on a per-library basis if desired. For existing libraries, click on the three dots to the right of the library name, choose Edit, choose Advanced, uncheck “Enable video preview thumbnails.” You can also do this when first setting up a library.

I have unchecked “Scan my library periodically” and other I choosed “as a scheduled task”.Scheduled tasks start at 3 a.m. and stop at 6 a.m.When I open my task manager I still see about 25% CPU usage at 9 a.m.
Reinstall or uninstall and reinstall don’t work.
After rollback to version 1.13.9.5466 everything goes normal

I’d hope their log could help. I think you must pick “advanced” in the settings area, then set the debug log (entry that showed up on left side after enabling advanced) to something other than disabled. Hopefully that area lists what is being worked on…

Disclaimer…I’m a very new Plex user and trying to play with that area. It just seems like it should say something if the program is doing anything.

Login via Plex Web, https://app.plex.tv/desktop. Look at activity icon in upper right. Click on it if you see a circle spinning around it. Will tell you what is happening.

Not saying it shows you everything, but does indicate when PMS is scanning libraries, generating thumbnails, and optimizing the database (I’ve seen those three, there are probably others as well).

My PMS activity icon is not spinning.

Yeah, I don’t know that it shows everything.

You can look for the Plex processes in Task Manager (Plex Media Scanner, Plex Transcoder, etc). See which ones are using CPU, memory, etc.

I checked the Task Manager.Only the Plex Media Server process is using CPU

I’m actually having the same issue on macOS Mojave 10.14.2. running PMS 1.14.1.5488-cc260c476. PMS idles my CPU 24/7 at 20% with no transcoding taking place. Using iStats I could trace this back to updating Plex Media Server December 16th. Is there a way to download previous builds? I can’t seem to find a link. Quitting PMS immediately drops my CPU to a normal idle.

Edit: I’ve used time machine to restore the previous PMS build. Version 1.12.1.4885 runs with no increased CPU usage on idle. Downloading fresh versions of 1.14.1.5488-cc260c476 and replacing the server does not fix the issue here.

Old version install packages exist in Update folder of it’s data directory. The last stable version without this problem is 1.13.9.5466 for me.

Seeing the same problem on 1.14.1.5488. Looks like downgrading is not allowed.

Enabled debug and verbose logging but not seeing anything interesting.

Am seeing “The Plex Update Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 5 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Restart the service.” in event viewer (system) but I’m not certain it’s not from me killing plex over and over.

edit: Manually stopped the update service. Problem persists

edit: uninstalled and installed 1.14.0.5470 and all is well. AppData persisted

I have exactly the same issue. 1.14.0.5470 is ok for me.

Same issue Mac Server: 1.14.1.5488 is maxing out my MacBook Pro's CPU 24/7

Same issue Linux Server: Ubuntu 18.10, Plex hogging 100% of a CPU-core 24/7 when idle
