Roku subtitle position issue

Server Version#:1.32.5.7516
Player Version#: Version 7.8 Build 4
Roku OS 12.5 Build 4167

Hello ever since the latest Roku OS update from 12 to 12.5 SRT subtitles have been appearing more towards the middle of the screen than they used to. On shows or movies with black bars it isn’t very noticeable but on full screen content it’s very distracting. I’ve attached pictures of how it was on OS 12.0 compared to 12.5.

Hi @AbbasMamdani. Hope you are doing well.

Sorry about the issue you are experiencing with this. Truth is: we don’t have control over the placement of subtitles on Roku, but I did reach out to them for clarification, and this is what I was told:

Looks like the subtitles are better positioned on 12.5. This type of change would have been implemented at the OS level.

So Roku changed the placement, not us.
If you have any more questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks, and sorry again for the inconvenience(s) this might have caused you.

Hi @voka71 thanks for the reply, is there any reason why this OS level change seems to be isolated to the Plex app? I did some further testing on Hulu, Disney plus and Paramount plus and they don’t seem to have this issue.

Also out of curiosity I tested Jellyfin and it also didn’t have any issues so I believe this is a Plex issue.

Hello again @AbbasMamdani. That is a good question. Roku said it might require that they investigate this, but where there is “no notable user impact, it might take a long time to get an answer due to bigger issues, priorities, and resourcing.”

I’ll keep you posted on this if I hear something. But rest assured that this isn’t something we have control over, but I am happy to keep pursuing this one to find answers.

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience(s).

Yea, I do hope we hear something very soon, and thanks for understanding.

Hey @voka71 it’s been almost a month since I’ve been able to use Plex do you have any updates regarding this issue?

@AbbasMamdani, no, nothing yet. I will follow-up on this again. Thanks, and sorry for the late response.

Hey @voka71 its been a while since I’ve followed up on this any updates? I’ve had to use Jellyfin since the Roku 12.5 update but it isn’t as good as Plex.

Hello @AbbasMamdani. Hope you are doing well. There are no updates yet.

Thanks.

@AbbasMamdani, any chance you could provide me with a sample file? Thanks, and happy new year!

Hi @voka71 happy new year to you as well! Here is a link to a sample file Sample.mkv - Google Drive.

Hi @AbbasMamdani and thanks for the new year message and for the sample file. I noticed it does not have subtitle on it.

Sample.srt (36.2 KB)

My apologies here’s the srt file.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. My colleague brought to my attention that the first file you sent has subtitles embedded on it already.

I’ll send that off to them [roku] and keep you posted.

Thanks for your patience!

@AbbasMamdani Could you send me a screenshot of your device info? Thanks.

We will also need the users device information. Please ask the user to send a screenshot of picture of the System Info screen that includes their user email and device information.

I have forwarded it to them. I’ll keep you posted!
Thanks, and have a great weekend.

@AbbasMamdani, I heard back from them, and they wanted to know what resolution you are outputting onto your TV. Thanks.
