How can I get Plex to recognize movies it is not recognizing correctly. For example, Plex can’t tell the difference between The Final Girl and The Final Girls and says I have two copies of the latter so I can’t watch the former. Also Room is showing up as The Room, both two entirely different movies.
I think Plex is trying too hard.

Assuming you have them named correctly and have the year in the title; you should usually have no problem with similarly named movies. In the case of Final Girl and The Final Girl; they were both released in 2015, so that might make it awkward. You’re probably going to have to “split” and correct them in Plex rather than your files.
Room and The Room should be okay if they are named correctly and have the year in the title.
If not; you’ll need someone better at this than me.

There are many ‘The Room and Room’ iterations - you’ll have to go to TMDB (the only database that matters) and try to piece the puzzle together.
