The AppleTV Client is a Mess

Server Version#: 1.41.9.9961
Player Version#: AppleTV App 8.45 (9684)

I don’t know what’s been going on but the AppleTV app has been getting worse and worse.

  1. When “Top Shelf” is enabled and you open a movie or show direct from top shelf one the main ATV menu, when it is done playing, there is no navigation that lets you get to your account or to play a different item. You end up stuck on a screen that you can’t leave. You literally have to force quit the app and re-open it, making launching media from Top Shelf useless. As far as I know, this has never worked right.

  2. When you are in the season view for a show, the cursor will show that you are on a specific episode, but when you long-press to bring up the menu, about 50% of the time, the option that you are toggling is actually applied to a different episode than the one that is shown as selected on the GUI. This happened within the past update or two.

  3. This one just started this week. If I play a DV video, it works fine. If I pause that video and then try and resume it later, I get the spinning wheel and eventually an error that it cannot be played because “dv == dv” whatever that means. However, if I mark this exact episode as watched and then unwatched and play it from the beginning, it works fine. The video is direct played so there is no transcoding. When you go to resume the video playback, you hear audio but it never plays the video almost as if there is a transcoding issue, but it is not transcoding.

I’ve been a lifetime plex pass member for many years and I am having a hard time understanding how the client is going downhill when none of this was a problem before.

It is worth noting that I have tried uninstalling and re-installing both PMS and the ATV client. All issues listed persist across re-installs.

I don’t believe the current app is being developed as all effort is going into the “new Plex Experience” app which is in TestFlight at version 2025.20.0 (1159).

Is there a way to get this app? Right now it says “This beta is full”

Surely Plex’s official answer to these issues isn’t to install a beta that isn’t available.

The app hasn’t changed in ages, so it cannot be getting ‘worse’.

DV content doesn’t really work right, best to get content that is not DV.
If you really care about Dolby anything, consider Infuse. Can play DV 5 and 8, can play Dolby Atmos.

As far as official app. There is an all new codebase to align it with iphone/ipad codebase so hang tight, Coming Soon™. The dolby stuff will still be a mixed bag its just too much proprietary mess.

The exact content in question worked perfectly for years, worked on Sunday of this week, and just stopped some time in the last two days. So clearly something has indeed changed somewhere.

The client has not. It’s very very easy to see when it was updated on the app store.

Sounds like you need to look at the server side

I think this is, or sounds like the same issue as if you let your ATV goto sleep after watching an ep whilst still on that screen, you can’t leave. You either have to watch something from the row of videos below, or quit.

Has happened for what feels like forever and idk if they will ever fix it because of PEP. And that has it’s own set of issues right now. I think they fixed that behaviour, but I’ve not finished an episode of anything in the latest beta for a while. So… there’s some sort of hope?

Which version of the app are you using?

The latest non-preview release however the behavior has been like this for years.

Works in the Preview, so that’s good news. Having said that, have you power cycled your ATV, not with remote.

Yes. This has been a bug for literally as long as I have had AppleTV (5+ years). Not something a power cycle or app uninstall/reinstall influences.

So I am glad I’m enjoying the new App. I can play all I need.

Made my day, thanks…

It was a good move updating.
