The Long, Hot Summer (1958) lacks any poster

As with a number of other 1950s-1970s films, The Long Hot Summer (1958) is missing a poster, I assume because there was a spurious DMCA request sent to Gracenote, and Gracenote hasn’t bothered to deal with it. I don’t expect Plex to fix this because Plex has literally never fixed a listing in response to a request like this. Just documenting another in a very, very, very long line of metadata deficiencies.

Previous threads I’ve made about this issue for other films:

The rights owners issue a DMCA takedown request and Plex has to comply.

Pull artwork from an online source and add it to the movie folder.

As I noted in many of the previous threads, I am aware of how to set my own poster. As I noted in this post, I am aware the likely cause is a DMCA notice.

But what you said is, in fact, not correct. Plex does need to be responsive to valid DMCA takedown notices; this does not mean complying with every demand no matter how invalid. Plex can choose to comply with every demand because there is less administrative overhead to do so. Plex chooses to use Gracenote as a provider for cover art, and Gracenote chooses to do things like take down art in response to DMCAs or to use AI slop art. Both Gracenote and Plex have the ability and resources to make new default posters if they choose to.

In turn, as a customer of Plex, I choose to file threads noting the egregiously bad state of Plex metadata, even though I’ve already fixed the data locally on my server. Especially when one of the major features of the new client update that everyone hates is adding even more Plex-supplied metadata that will similarly be left to languish.

Please stop these useless threads. While Plex is not required by DMCA/copyright law, it is a choice that Plex has made to respect these requests. This is probably done for one of several reasons, either Plex wants to minimize friction with Copyright Owners, or due to some of the contracts they have in place which allows them to stream some media via the ad supported side, which ties their hand in these requests. I know of at least 3-4 other rationales that could apply but not going to just throw out random thoughts.

Given the size of Plex, and the fact that Plex wants to keep their Public Image away from copyright violations it makes sense that Plex has made this decision. You have 2 Choices, either except it, or find an alternate software that ignores DMCA take downs.

I actually have a third choice: to report metadata errors as I find them.
