The Plex Update Service service terminated unexpectedly

Server Version#: v1.32.5.7349
Player Version#: NA

When upgrading my PMS I get a crash with the following error written to the event log:

The Plex Update Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

This is what I see in the logs:

Any luck tracking this down would be appreciated.

HI @sa2000 I hope this finds you well. Please see the above. This seems like a bug. At the very least, shouldn’t Plex Update Service.exe be writing out the error to a log somewhere? Thank you for any insight/guidance you can provide.

This server update does at least sound like it may have a related fix: Plex Media Server - #600 by chris_decker08

Thank you for that @OttoKerner can you please reference the item # you are referring to? I scanned that list several times but saw nothing referencing the update service.

I was mistaken. I thought there was a release note pertaining to this topic, but it turned out this was about something else.
Sorry about that!

Would like to put this into context - so standard zip of the server logs

and also copying out all the plex updater service logs and include in your post with the server logs zip

These Plex Updater Service logs are now in system protected and hidden area
to get these logs,
Run cmd as Administrator
Start / Run / cmd - right click “Run As Adminstrator”

Then in this command line window,
cd "C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs"

and

copy *.log %Temp%

and zipping the 6 log files copied to %TEMP% and including with the other zip

Also look for any dmp files relating to the failure in %LocalAppData%\CrashDumps and if any found, zip and send me by Private Message

No worries there are a lot of moving pieces here :grimacing:

Weirdly enough nothing was in this directory and it’s where I first looked. I have sent you the ZIPs in a DM. :+1:

Thank You

You appear to be running Plex Media Server as a Windows Service or as Scheduled Task. The updater is not supported currently with such a setup.

I do run Plex Media Service as a service as well and I do all my updates manually - stopping plex, updating it and ensuring i do not have auto start on login and then starting Plex - I use this product from @cjmurph - PMS As A Service

We are working with the developer at the moment to get the updater to work with the service. I would suggest you switch to using this 3rd party solution and look out for a future release note for Plex Media Server referencing working with the PMS Service

The Appdata folder within "C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile is hidden - but can be accessed through the command line when running as administrator

I have been running it for many years now under x86 without issue. It was only when I upgraded to x64 that it stopped working. Very much the bummer here.

I can confirm, however, that running PMS from the Windows Menu and attempting the upgrade after this is initialized does work as expected, so it appears your diagnosis here is correct. Unfortunately. :sob:

Thank you very much for your time and investigation. :+1::pray:

Please note that I was referring to crashdumps.
