I use it almost daily. However, I always do it one folder at a time and make sure it finds the correct metadata. It has been wrong…a lot.
It makes an educated guess and it can be wrong. So far I have seen very few errors, but that’s likely becuase mine started off with quite accurate filenames.
My solution for this ended up in me setting a Windows 7 VM in Vmware, and mapping my TV/Movies folders into it and then used TheRenamer to rename and manage files as before.
https://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/rename-my-tv-series-v2/ is working well for me after I migrated away from Filebot.
Thanks, just checked that one out and installed it, and the interface is nice, but that is a lot of clicking and typing for 1 episode.
It was more than me just manually renaming the file.
TheRenamer was drag and drop multiple files and would automatically find them. This feels like more work so far. I’ll scope out the site for the steps, maybe I’m missing something, but you have to search the show, get the episodes, clock that episode, add the file, then rename? Not efficient at all.
It’s FAR more likely Plex will bork a perfect file name, than it is for FileBot to bork it’s retrieval.
Plex Perfect Filename Bork Score: 10% (at least)
FileBot Discover Bork Score - .001%
FileBot wins - hands down.
Ya All of my files are renamed by filebot then interpreted by plex. I see extremely consistent accuracy. More than 99.9%

Yep. I can’t remember the last time I renamed a movie or series using Filebot and Plex made an error crawling it. More than a year at least. And I don’t even follow Plex’s “best practices” for renaming structure.
I still use it, basically because i think it’s the best. I’ve made a workaround, kinda a lengthy one, but i get to have my movies and shows renamed right. you are welcome to try my approach…
- download and install oracle virtualbox
- download and install windows 7 on the virtual machine
- install therenamer on the virtual windows 7
yes, its a lengthy setup, but once you get it up and running, its worth all unnecessary frustrations.
Doing the same here.
- Using the free tool of Oracle Virtualbox to install a Windows 7 inside my Windows 10.
Oracle Virtualbox - Download the free ISO of Windows 7.
KMS pico Windows 7 versions
You don’t need to activate the windows 7 as you can always return to the initial snapshot.
Once the windows 7 is installed I install TheRenamer and create a drive linked to my NAS with NET USE.
From there on I can adjust all the files within the Windows 7.
I’ve been using filebot for ages and while it does work well, since the latest update of theTVDB.com, I have resisted updating to the paid version.
I’ve only just discovered TVRename and I think it’s better. The reason is because unlike filebot, TVRename notifies you of missing/upcoming episodes which is very helpful. Particularly for those of us with large libraries when it’s often difficult to keep up with when new episodes/seasons are being released.
@Valharion do you know any free alternatives for Mac OS?
@CHNGR sorry, no clue mate.
I use FileBot and you can have it ignore certain file type and I have it customized to create a folder tree based on criteria from the parameters passed to a .BAT file.
I buy a yearly license directly from the FileBot website and it’s only $6/yr that way. I feel it’s a fair price for the efforts the guy puts into it and the convenience his program provides. I get it if you don’t want to go that route, but I’m sure most limitations you can think of can be handled in some way.
