I have to agree, a couple weeks back the PS4 PLEX got an update…honestly its the worse update I have ever seen on any application. The app was totally fine and all of a sudden it jumped back like 10 years. Its so awful and hard to navigate, very disappointed. I came on here just to see if there was a way to revert back to the last version.
I like the UI update. But can we have theming at some time… like user created themes and styles so we as a community can come up with our own UI themes…
Also back end part of this update issues:
I get frequent plex crashes
Bruffing is an issue now
skips eps if you let it auto play seasons or play list.
UI feels laggy and not smooth or polished
I have my ports DMZ on pc
And open on every other end for plex on my devices
I’ve uninstalled ps4 plex app and reinstalled after a database restore(defrag)
The new update definitely has issues on the ps4 very clunky at best. Hope they start to give the ps4 more attention with over 80 million units connected to there TVs
dont think plex admins give a F about problems or about customers as long as everything looks nice
Most important thing is, that the blog posts are hilarious…
Yup. I actually like new UI, it works for me and is what all modernplex UIs look like. It’s quite fast to me (though I do have PS4). But no HDR on device serving HDR games and Netflix is sad joke. Come on!
I like the new UI also, but atm, at least for me, there’s no way to open the app on my PS4 Pro. That’s pretty f’d up. But I like the UI too. I haven’t seen it on PS4 yet, but I assume it’s the same like on the TV mode on the Plex Windows app?
I just tried Plex again on my PS4, still utterly crap. EVERYTHING else works perfectly: phone, tablet, PC, but PS4 can’t even connect to the server. My IP is static, port is open on my router, Remote access is setup fine, correct ports are indicated on the plex App, I even tried putting the Google DNS on the conbsole but impossible to access (app or web browser on the console).
Why is it so damn hard to make something that works?
You can tinker your setup as often as you want. Nothing you can do to get the PS4 Plex app working, since it’s full of bugs atm.
I have a non-pro PS4 and find that the app mostly works. I’ve had a couple of issues.
sometimes it will freeze/crash when repeatedly opening large libraries. If I go to a title in movies, then back out and go to a title in a collection in my movies, then back out and move to TV it will sometimes hang loading the TV data, or vice versa, that kind of thing.
Have had movies freeze when searching. Really, my only complaint is the searching sucks. It would be great if it was more fluid and actually scan the films. Add in a 1.5x so you can watch the files with sound (handy for sports or wrestling, that kind of thing).
Otherwise, things simply work for me. Love the UI, only thing I would change is when in a COLLECTION, have it list out like it does when in the “Movies” directory instead of a tape roll that you have to scroll through. You can list items, I think, but it’s not as pretty poster art wise.
Add me to the list of grumpy PS4 users with the latest update. The crashing alone is a real problem. As a daily user, I can count on one hand the number of times the previous version had crashed; with the new update, I can expect it to crash at least once a day. Today alone, I experienced four crashes trying to play an item in my library. (I was ultimately able to get it working, which tells me the problem isn’t with the file.) There isn’t any readily identifiable cause for the crashes; any action can cause a crash, and it’ll also crash if left idle on the home screen for too long. Just a mess.
That’s without getting into the reduced functionality and discoverability of the new app. Unless I’m missing something, the search interface is only accessible from within individual libraries. Previously, I could search my entire library from the home screen. I just don’t see why this option would be removed, since it was really useful for navigating larger libraries.
Other random things:
- The UI for viewing collections is really disappointing. So much wasted screen space to display a single row of covers. It’s especially confusing when the collections filter works perfectly well within the full library view and provides better sorting options.
- Similarly within music libraries, the “artist” view is really limited, especially for artists with a large number of albums. Lack of sorting options is a problem here too.
- It’s a real bummer that we can’t see year/duration/other metadata from the full library view. Now the only piece of information that’s displaying upfront is the title. The previous version of the app was smarter about displaying additional metadata when you hovered over an item; if I’m sorting by duration, it’s really handy to be able to see an item’s duration without having to click through to the item’s page. (Similarly if I’m sorting by year.)
- It looks like the app doesn’t generate genre/actor/director categories within the Movies page anymore. While that feature needed some refinement IMO, it’s disappointing to see that it’s no longer available whatsoever.
- It seems like titles and covers take longer to populate than with the previous version, but I guess I have no way to quantify that.
Overall, really disappointing to see Plex taking such a step back in organizing and displaying libraries. Hopefully future updates can get us back to a better place.
Since the latest update to the playlist covers on PS4 now when I scroll to far down my playlists, the screen goes blank and the entire app seems to freeze up. The only fix is to shut down the app entirely and restart. However, that still doesn’t allow me access to any playlist that alphabetically comes after the letter M.
Hi folks. We’re working our way through the list of reported bugs, and included some fixes in our last update. It would be helpful to create a separate thread for each particular bug, so we could better keep track of them. Thanks.
so I just installed the app and the initial launch menu screen gives me an error message about my connection not being secure. I then read that this is quite common and don’t really mind. The problem is that the menu screen seems frozen and tehre’s no way for me to click to allow insecure connections. The whole menus is completely unresponsive (although i can still kill the app via the PS button)
The most recent bug I have is that I have multiple versions of certain movies… an HD copy, a 4K copy, and perhaps others… Each in a different movie catergory… but if I play one version and stop playing at some point… you would expect to see it in the home screen to continue from that point… BUT what happens is all versions show up in the home screen next to each other at the same point of my pause… also, if I have a version with a particular audio track (rifftrax or something) it doesn’t always play that audio track even if it’s the default for that chosen movie.
On top of that, this “many version” movie issue also seems to really mess with the interface (lag, not loading, buffering issues, crashes and the like)
Just an FYI.
Yea its been like that because Plex categorizes the movies by their names, not their quality, so it sees the HD and 4K copy as the same movie. It would be nice for them to implement that though, for example, compare movie name, size, location, file name, etc. All of those could be used by Plex to distinct the difference between two files and realize that they’re are indeed not duplicates. On the other hand, it would be nice if they did also do this to prevent duplicates so when Plex scans a directory twice, it won’t add it again causing it to appear twice when in fact it is actually just the one file.
