Here is a video explaining how not having exclusive control of the windows audio system leads to degradation of the audio output stream including testing and comparing the output using spotify lossless as an example.
Plex doesn’t have this issue as it has an option for exclusive audio, plexamp does not (though it’s supposed to be a pure audio program, ironically).
Ironically, the guy shows an RME as a DAC, which is optimised to work ONLY with ASIO…
now for me the chances of Spotify implementing ASIO are even lower than with Plexamp

It works just fine with other drivers. What it cannot do without asio is to switch sample rate, because if it does that, it can change the number of available channels. And that confuses Windows and other apps.
I know that very well, because I’ve had two of these over the years.
But in fact, I said ‘optimised for’…I know this very well because it is my current DAC, and for the reasons you mentioned, I am forced to use it without drivers, unlike other devices that are much cheaper and do not have this problem. There are some amusing threads on this topic on their forum.
Despite everything, it’s a GREAT device, and I’m waiting for Plexamp to give us WASAPI in the end
