Titles continually overwritten. What a disappointment Plex is

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

What a disappointment Plex has been so far. I purchased a lifetime membership and spent hours organizing my library on good recommendations only to find that all of my hard work was lost the next time I opened Plex. YES, I’ve read the articles about using the (worthless) lock. YES, I’ve read all the forum posts about how this bug was “fixed” in 2017. News flash: it wasn’t.

If the server is going to be this bad at reading titles, it really shouldn’t erase ALL of my custom ones every time it reads the library at best and seemingly every time I change Plex screens at worst.

What you describe happens if you have

  • Automatic or planned scans enabled
  • Configured Plex to allow emptying its trash after every scan
  • Media on a drive that can “easily” disconnect (or take relatively long to spin up after having been put to sleep)

I take it you have your data stored on an external or network attached drive?
If you do… you should always uncheck Empty trash automatically after every scan in Settings > Server > Library.

With this setting unchecked, Plex will not immediately throw away your library items if it can no longer find the underlying file(s).

The issue described above can also result in your library being rebuild over and over. This way, Plex is actually showing you a “vanilla” version of your library. It’s not so much that Plex ignores the locks… the library including your locks had actually been deleted and built from scratch (without your edits).

Interesting. No, my data is stored on an internal 8TB HD.

Could be a number of reasons… e.g. “eco” versions of disks that will take ages to spin up after sleeping.
Anyway… take a look at the library settings and uncheck the Empty trash automatically after ever scan option!

if you are having title naming problems, then it sounds like your files are not organized/named according to plex requirements.

edit, also if this is about music, well yeah that sucks, plex new music scanner is not very flexible.

you can edit the library and enable ‘prefer local metadata’ that may help, but there are still problems.

just search for music threads and no doubt you will come across many complaints.

so your complaint is about music?

you never really provided any details whatsoever, other than just a rant.

Yet others use the software with no problem…Think about that.
