Trailer playback fail on all movies files

Hi,

why when I tried to play trailers of the movie I’m always getting this error message.

one is from a Apple TV and one is from a Vizio TV

Thank You
Frank

Are you experiencing this for trailers of media in your own library or some of Plex’ online media sources. If this is a trailer from a movie in your own / a shared library… is it a trailer you added yourself as a local extra or one added by Plex?

I had this happen once to me. Scared the crap outta me. I think I restarted the server and it fixed it.

Hi,

All my movies are on a QNAP NAS server it’s my own library the movies are working good it’s only when I’m trying to look at the trailer before running the movie and I get that error message. Playback error, conversion failed. the transcoder exited due to an error.

Thanks

Hi,

I will try this and let you know.

Thanks

This is what I get.

Are these your own “trailer” extras, or are you using the Plex-Pass feature where Plex automatically downloads and includes the extras for you?

Does this happen for any other movie? Perhaps the trailer for this movie is corrupt (worth checking into by someone who knows how to fix it). Try another movie, see if that movie’s trailer fails to play.

I’m using the Plex-Pass feature where Plex automatically downloads and includes the extras for me but it does that to all my movies, with so maybe updates something did change and I can’t fix it. I have no problem playing a full movie, just can’t get the trailers / extras to work

You use any network firewall or what-not? Based on the delay when I use Plex-provided extras, that they are not local files. Imagine if Plex went and downloaded trailers and extras for every single file in your library, your database would be gigantic. Instead, it streams it from online on the spot, which for me results in a 5+ second delay before the file plays. If you have something on the network intercepting unknown online traffic, maybe it’s blocking this.

I would expect server logs would give someone a huge hint as to why the trailer play fails. Try to watch a trailer, see the error, then wait about 30 seconds, then save the logs. I think someone who knows how to read them would find the problem.

The trailers & extras stream from Plex. They are not downloaded to your server.

The movie is available at watch.plex.tv, Watch $5 a Day (2008) Full Movie Free Online - Plex.

Can you stream the movie and/or trailer from that location?

Also, try it from another network, such as using your phone on the mobile network.

On my home network, trailers streaming from Plex take about 10 seconds to start, but they do play.

Is the video transcoder disabled on your server? If yes, enable it.

I will try this and let you know, my server is a QNAP NAS system.

I did try with iphone, apple tv and Samsung tv always the same error

Thanks will look at my settings again

Kinda? They’re downloaded by the server on demand, and then streamed - and transcoded if necessary - from the server to the client.

@frankjones561_gmail.com it might be worth sharing server logs here.

I thought they streamed direct from a server at Plex.

However, given your comment and @OttoKerner’s that the transcoder needs to be enabled, it seems I was wrong.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hi,

Thanks for all your help I was able to fix the problem my NAS QNAP clock was not the same has my computer now the time is the same all my trailers now work, so happy.
